Engine Block Number

Just bought a 60’s CJ, looks to be a small block Chev V8 but engine number reads ‘0I52757F56F’ anyone have any ideas? I’m puzzled. Thanks!

 

Look for the number on the top of the block right near the bellhousing flange. Those numbers you posted don't look like Chevy casting numbers.
Does the bellhousing flange peak in the top center?

pretty snug back there, without pulling the motor. Any idea what the code I sent is, or another way to identify? Thanks

 

Where did you find those numbers you posted? The block casting number is the primary way to identify domestic engines.

If you have a SBC engine, look at the flat at the front right corner (passenger) side of the block in front of the right head. The engine data number is stamped into the flat. There are numerous locations on the web with information to decode the number or post it here and we can decode the number.

As Donny noted, the casting number will ID who manufactured the engine block, where and when. The data number at the front of the engine will tell what the engine is or was (283, 327, 350, etc.) when it left the factory.

 

The stamping on the right front deck boss tells the specific details of that particular engine options, ie 2 or 4 bbl carb, manual or auto trans, high compression, etc. These numbers are often milled off, or too shallow to read from decking the block at rebuilds. These are found on Big Blocks too. This is why I was asking the OP where he found the numbers. The casting numbers at the rear flange are best to identify the engine. I have a master catalog of nearly every domestic gas and diesel engine casting number made for the past 70 years.

I believe you have a 1956 265 that was equipped with a 2 barrel carb and a powerglide transmission

 

I pulled these numbers from the front passenger side of the block, on the flat. The stamp almost seems fake, or created after.will try to post a picture

 

I located ‘3720991’ looking like a 265?

I got the info from The Complete Chevrolet V8 Engine Code Pocket Guide 55-91. The first F means The Flint, Michigan plant and the 56 means the year of the engine and the last F means 265 2 barrel with powerglide. According to the book anyhow. I too own a 265.

 

Yes, That casting number shows a '55-'57 Chevy 265 V8. I suspected your stamped number was indicating a 265 from the F56 as CJ3B posted. Thats why I was asking were you were getting these nunbers.
That 265 should be a good engine for a Jeep. Yours is probably mounted with a plate across the front of the block?
