I charged my battery up to 12.3 amps and fired it up. I chescked the voltage and it dropped to around 12. I shut the jeep off and disconnected the generator from the voltage regulator and connected the fld to bat via an alligator clip. Fired it up again and the amps were still there around 12. I pulled the throttle and it was still the same. I turned on the lights and it dropped to 11.7. I pulled the throttle again and it stayed the same. So now I believe the generator is bad. What is the best way to fix this? Is there a rebuild kit for this? If it is just the brushes can I replace them without removing the whole thing? Should I just get a new generator? I'm trying to find one, but the best I can do is $250+ for a rebuild. Is there another one I could find like a Delco on eBay? Thanks in advance, guys. I just want to get back out there as quickly as possible.

Welcome. You could try just cleaning the commutator first before pulling things apart.

Changing brushes is easy, but it will be a lot easier if you pull the generator. Takes about ten minutes. Probably should have new rubber mounting bushings on hand.

Is your regulator/generator combo correctly polarized? ("Flashed?"). Fanbelt tight? Be sure you have a good regulator and battery before you go wild.

Also, watch eBay etc for less expensive units, or components.

My personal approach would be find a used unit from a donor jeep, or find a local rebuild shop, run by a couple old guys down behind the rail-yard. Seriously. Ask at your FLAPS.
