Drivers Side Exhaust Manifold Hotter Than Passanger Side ( Duantless 225 V6)

I have been racking my brain trying to troubleshoot what is going on here. The left (drivers side) exhaust manifold on my Dauntless 225 runs way warmer than the passenger side. After only a minute or two, the drivers side will be warm enough to vaporize water, while the passenger side will only be warm to the touch.

I originally thought this was due to the old (rebuilt several times) crappy Holly 500 carb we have on it. The jeep always ran poorly with it backfiring, popping, etc. I recently installed a replacement motocraft 2100 on it, and it runs considerably better; however, the drivers side exhaust manifold remains warm. I was thinking that the hot side was running lean.

My next thought was that it might have something to do with pushrod adjustment (we had adjustable pushrods) that was keeping a valve open. I decided to throw a spare set of pushrods from my parts 225 in today to test that theory with no change in results. Passenger exhaust manifold cool, drivers side hot.

I also considered a vacuum leak and had use a propane torch (while extinguished) to blow around the intake manifold and carb searching for any change in RPM. No results but I am considering using some starting fluid next as that is a bit more accurate.

The engine has a fairy fresh rebuild and runs decently other than one exhaust manifold is really hot while the other is cold. The new carburetor cleared up the backfire popping issues that I was having.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts, steps, or ideas to figure out whats going on.

It's odd that it's one side. That would seem to rule out ignition issues. What type of intake manifold do you have? If it's a dual plane, one port on each side would be getting the same mixture from the carb as two ports on the other side. A non-contact thermometer might be able to measure each port to verify that. It seems like you've either got an idle mixture issue on one carb barrel, or poor air distribution by the intake manifold? It's also possible you have a stealth vacuum leak via the intake manifold gasket into the lifter valley.

Another possibility is exhaust restriction one side, although that wouldn't likely effect things at idle.

Does it have the same issue when not at idle like immediately after a drive?

Seems like someone had a similar problem here in the past. For some reason I thought it might be something like an even fire distributor on an oddfire engine. I just can't remember.....

We are running headers for exhaust manifolds. I initially thought it was something to do with carburation, that is why I replaced the Holly 500 with the motocraft 2100 - to test that theory. Same thing, the drivers side exhaust manifold is obliviously much hotter than the passenger side. Not sure the planning on the intake manifold, but I do know it is originally set up for a 2 barrel Rochester. If all else fails, I will have to pull the intake manifold and see if there is some kind of blockage (I'd prefer not to do that if I don't have to). I may see if the spare intake manifold is a two barrel or single port. If it is a two barrel I could try the spare.

    Thanks for advice. -Kolten

I am running a stock 225 distributor with HEI conversion, so not an even fire issue.

Do you mean stock distributor with pertronix?

Coil integrated into cap or not?

What does your HEI conversion consist of?

I had that problem for a long time and it bugged the heck out of me along with ok, but not great, performance.
It went away after i realized I didn’t have the odd fire cap in the right order and fixed it after studying the “where does number 1 go” thread. The odd fire caps blank spots were hitting in the wrong order causing he passenger bank to be basically not timed correctly (is my guess).

I am another that would suggest looking into timing and/or ignition. Odd fire vs even fire issue, or firing sequence off in some way with Pertronix ring? The hot vs cold manifold on each side has been indicative of even vs odd fire distributor issues in the past....worth a double or triple check.

I wasn't able to locate the where does number 1 go thread. Is there a link for it?? I am willing to look at the ignition again, is there something particular I need to look into with regard to the correct distributor cap?

Hah, shows what I know ruling out ignition. The odd firing order does throw a kink into things. You have to make sure you're on the right lobes to match the spacing of the firing events. The vacuum advance should point towards the fan and the cap should be oriented like so:

This thread shows the orientation (even though it's an HEI distributor):

You might want to double check your Pertronix parts and install also.

As you can see it should be lined up to fire on number 1 at TDC

Is there a Delco number visible on the distibutor housing ?
Is the firing order correct ?
There are two different Delco V6 distributor caps.
It had to do with the position of the window for adjusting the points/ dwell.
    I'm thinking ignition issue.

Looks good so far...what does the magnetic ring under the rotor look like?

Where should the window be located? I was wondering this as well because the window is located toward the drivers side near intake manifold. I would think it should be located more accessible. I will check for a delco number next time I'm out there. Where on the housing should it be located?
