Differences in Gas Tank Vendors

Need a new gas tank. Is one vendor's tank better than another? I'll probably go 4WD Hardware cause they are the cheapest I've seen but I will pay for quality elsewhere. Thanks.

 

AFAIK all the plastic tanks are made by MTS. You can go to their web site for more details.

Don't know who's making the steel tanks, but I expect they are the same regardless of which retailer you choose.

 

I got the one from 4WD and it is from the same Canadian OEM manufacturer (Spectra)that made the one that was in the jeep.
It was identicle. Same part # and everything.
Great quality for the money.

 

X2 on Canada. Just bought a new tank for a flatty that is stamped MADE IN CANADA. Looks to be a pretty decent tank. It is also painted silver.

 

Yeah I figured as much - I am going steel.

Daryl - did you have to make any adjustments to your tank float/sender to get it to read accurately on the gauge? I need a new sender but have the original working gauge.

 

When I installed my new steel gas tank from 4wd.com I had trouble getting it to fit. The original tank had rounded corners and the replacement had square corners. So I had to bend all of the corners up so it would fit. I thought about cutting or grinding the corners for a clean install but was worried I would compromise the weld. So I chose to bend them instead.

 

So long as the trimmed portion is outside of the seam weld, there shouldn't be a problem. I had to trim some of mine.

 

Do your self a favor and throw away the jute pad that is used under the tank and replace it with some closed sell foam. It holds moisture and rusts out the tank.

 

What is that tank coated with? It's not just bare metal is it? Galvanized? I'm just curious.

 

Looks like it's painted.

 

It looks to be galvanized at the factory, but was also covered with a light cosmoline substance that had some dirty spots in it.
I wiped it clean of most of the cosmoline on the undersides and painted it with some silver paint that I had laying around.
At the time I didn't have a skid plate for it and didn't want it looking grungy back there.

The tank I took out had been trimmed away at the corner holes , too.
It won't clear the hanger brackets without doing so. I folded mine at first but its much easier to cut away the amount you need to clear. Just stay outside the weld seam.
