Dana 44 question: I am in the process of narrowing a chev dana 44 axle for my cj2a. I would like to go 54" wms to wms and I have been told the I can use a short side axle from a wagoneer and a long side axle from a early bronco. Will this work? Do I need to fill and redrill the rotors and hubs from 6 to 5 lug or can I swap in ford parts?

This page will link you to all kinds of good axle swap info. For example, click on the D44 front swap, it will link you to a number of articles.

Hope one of them is useful to you.

the early bronco 44's use a 267 u-joint same size as a 30, its not a 297 u-joint so the only thing yuo will be gaining is a bigger shaft and 3 more splines. i take the chevy 44 and cut them down to the scout inner axle size and make the axles over all length 57 wms to wms.
the chevy 44 are easyer to work with if you are going spring over and using YJ springs and now is the time to correct the pinion angle and rotating the knuckles. the chevy use's a 6-lug spindle pattern and the scout use's a 8 lug pattern ( spindles ) but there is two holes that line up so you can use those two hole as a starting point and re-drill the scout to the chevy pattern, very easy and simple.
i dont think you can get any smaller than 57'' trying to use stock 44 shafts, i tried several differnt combos before. if your dead set on using 54'' wide axle go with a dana 30 and by some chrome shafts, it might be the same cost as buying several 44 axles and cutting one to fit, jason
