I have a 1960 CJ5 with a Dana 25 front end which I just rebuilt completely 2 years ago. I just picked up a 1964 CJ5 with a Dana 27 (27A is what is stamped on it) front end. I am using the body and frame from the '64 and the drivetrain from the '60 to make one jeep. Will a Dana 27 swap out for a Dana 25? I know about the ring gear differences in the axles. I'm curious about the mounting locations, width, knuckle differences, etc, etc...... Will I have any problems or are these axles pretty much interchangable?

AFAIK, completely interchangeable 'cept for the DS U-joint size..might have to change pinion yolks from one to the other.

yokes should be the same as the smaller ujoints didn't start till the v6 IIRC
    everything else the same
    should be a straight swap

27A is a designation for a front axle. IH Scout 80's and some other various vehicles over the years also used the Dana 27 in a rear application. As you can imagine they didn't last long when used in the rear.......

thats right. the early scouts had front and rear 27's. those early scouts also had the option of front and rear powerlocks. thanks for clearing that up.
