This sounds stupid but can anyone help out a newbie? I just drained the lube out of my transfer case and am not sure of the correct fill hole. The manual calls for 2.5 pints while I can only get just shy of 2 pints in. If I'm laying under the jeep looking at the back of the transfer case I took the plug out from the top right side of the case ( on pass. side ) to fill is this the right hole or is there one up higher on drivers side? 1975 cj5 w/ 258 3spd. and a dana 20 transfer case. Any help appreciated.

you have the correct fill hole for D20
did you drain the trans or transfer case?
drain for transfer case is in the bottom of the pan
my Jeep manual says 3 pts for D20 transfer case FYI

I drained and refilled the transmission already. I wondered if this was the correct hole because when first removed quite a bit of gear oil came out. The skid plate hole is offset from the drain plug so I used a siphen to get the lube out instead of trying to drop the skid. Maybe I didnt get all the old gear lube out? Why so much oil runout when the fill plug removed?

you may not have removed all the oil ftom the D20
also, oil can and will flow between the 2 units, trans and D20, thru the rear trans bearing
try filling the D20 first, then fill the trans, this will help
then you know both are full
also when checking the oil levels, after driving, the D20 will always appear to be slightly overfilled, as oil will come out right away, so be ready to thread the plug right back in.
    this is a normal condition

Thanks for the tips just wanted to make sure before I got back on the road. Just got a couple inches of snow and went out playing in it this morning before the plows came out. Came home to rest and decided to check the levels and ended up running to parts store to buy all new lube. So now I should check the transmission fluid again?

here is what I would do
    remove trans fill plug
use your'e little finger (they bend out on the end)
insert little finger in fill hole, finger pointed down, and remove
if oil on end of finger, your'e good to go!
disclaimer: not a Jeep factory authorized method
and I shoulda mentioned that the trans might always appear to be slightly low on oil, just because of the oil transfering between the two
