Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to decide if the motor goes east or west when it gets rebuilt, but this sounds exactly like the type of shop I'm looking for. :)

I just figured out that it's been a little over a year, since we pulled the engine for a rebuild. I remember thinking that I would have it done in time for last summer. How naive!

Need to fill the radiator, and flush the gas tank...then we should be ready for a test fire on the engine...fingers crossed!!!

Leak in the radiator. Bad news, a new aluminum radiator = $810.00. Good news, the radiator shop said $60.00 to fix the leak. Should be picking it up at the end of this week. Then we'll try this again...

Radiator in (local shop fixed the leak), thermostat housing re-sealed. Just need to plumb the electric gas pump. I'm done with predicting when I'll actually turn it over. Hopefully that will ne the next post.

LOL - we keep hitting little snags with the Blue '49 too. We were 'this close' to getting it going last summer to find a major issue with the way the PO put the drive train together and pulled it all apart to do it 'my way'.

Our hard deadline is tested and running by July 1 when the middle boy (who has claimed it) comes home on leave from Hawaii for some wheeling time.

    Good Luck ;)

Turned over barely once, and started right up!

    Charging system...check.

Major oil leak out of the timing cover...check.

    Take 2:
Add another gasket, and tighten bolts on timing cover..check.

    Starts right up again.

    No oil or coolant leaks...check.

No smoke out of the tailpipe...check.

Leave running in 90+ heat for about 30 minutes, cooling system...check.

And, that's as far as we got.

The engine wasn't in the worst condition to start with; but, hearing how smooth it runs now...WOW! Before, it sounded like an overpowered sewing machine with sandpaper for cylinder walls. Now, it's nothing but a purr all the way through acceleration.

There's a slight leak from the accelerator pump on the carb...should have this buttoned up tomorrow.

Then I'm sure that the re-built 4 speed tranny, clutch, overdrive, axles, lockers, hubs (front and rear), and 4-wheel disc brakes will work seamlessly on the first go...ok, maybe a little adjusting

Really wanting this done before the long weekend!

Great job, keep it up, it'll be worth it in the end. Time for a video?

No video yet :( Got to test drive it though. Felt good until the master cylinder developed a big ol leak...gonna try to see if it can be fixed, but probably needs replacing. Looking at Herm's dual reservoir replacement...anyone have experience with it?

OD, and 4 speed felt good, but the clutch is different. The only thing we did to the clutch is resurface the flywheel. When I bought the Jeep, the pedal went to the floor, and was tolorable to push. Now it takes everything I've got to engage it, and the pedal only goes about half way down. Haven't got to adjusting it yet...hope this helps.

At the start of July, I decided to take on the rats nest under the dash. I had already bought a wiring kit a few years ago; and, have patiently been waiting to install it.

Not frustrated; but, I seriously thought it would take a couple of weekends to get it done. Maybe with enough coffee, and the wife and kids leaving town, this would have been a feasible time frame. We're at the start of September, and I have the ignition and dash done. The lights are the last thing to do. Every connection : crimped, soldered, then heat shrunk...no wonder shops won't do re-wire jobs and/or charge you enough to cry to do them...they are a PIA!!!

I'm using a Centech GV-16J fuse panel. It's got the basics; but, it's really meant for the 76 and newer CJ5. Some of the diagrams don't jive with my 70. Not enough to scare me, but just adds time to make sure that I'm making the right connections.

Here's a couple of pics of my upgraded gauges. I used that flexible LED strip crap from Autozone. I was impressed at the intensity of the light with such a deep blue!

I got rear-ended about a month ago. Felt great for about 3 days, then all the sudden back and neck pain. After some physical therapy and great prescription drugs, I felt good enough to mount the switches back into the dash, hook up the battery, and start chasing gremlins. Not too many, but a few! Good news is it turned over, started, and purred. No sparks, or battery explosions.

I found a great way to work on the dash! Hang it a little behind, and you can access it from above. This saved my neck and back, compared to playing yoga under the dash!

I really like the LED strip lighting in the speedo. Just might have to use that idea on mine if you don't mind 8)

Absolutely! Since the first car that I've owned, I've wanted to change the color of the dash lights. The "super bright" version of these LED's is almost too bright! If it were any other color, I would suggest installing a dimmer, or using the "normal bright" version of the LED strips.

Here's a pic my wife took, when I first got it back from the motor and drivetrain rebuild earlier this summer. There's very few pics of it, without something being apart, missing, or dented :) HA! I had to edit this...the passenger side seat is missing!

Good looking jeep and build thread thanks for the inspiration. I particularly liked when you talked about machining and machine shops and the knowledge that these people have it really is quite amazing.

Something about the Renegade wheels with the matching Warn hubs really sets it off for me.

    It looks perfect.

The rockers were off of a Jeep tub out of the junk yard. 1/8" thick steel. All trim was painted with rustoleum black hammered paint.

Got a chance to start on the exterior wiring. Started with headlights and front park lights. Dimmer/High beam floor switch only works on one connection. Bulbs work, when I switch the low beam/high beam connections, and voltmeter confirms no power out of the other contact...easy fix. Driver side park light needs a spring replacement in the socket , otherwise all is good.
