Hey guys, my next project in getting the old beast tidied up needs to be the leaky crank pulley. It leaks 3-4 good drops after every drive, makes a mess down there flinging oil off the pulley, and then oozes a little more oil over the next day or two.

In researching the engine diagrams, it looks like there is a circular seal behind the pulley. Is that the typical culprit?

I am not an engine guy (but learning, and just overhauled most of my drivetrain and speedo) and it seems maybe I should pull the pulley, and get at that seal. Is it easily replaceable?

My pulley is also a double pulley and it wobbles pretty bad too. I’m going to replace it. It’s a double pulley and my water pump and alternator ONLY align with the outer pulley, so I think I need another double... right? I’m not sure I can go with a single and move that water pump pulley rearward to align.

    Thanks!

I'm not an engine guy, but I do own a couple of Jeeps. I'd replace the pulley first. Cheap and easy to try.

The seal is installed from inside the timing cover. This means the timing cover has to come off. The timing cover also bolts to the oil pan. This means you may need an oil pan gasket when you remove the timing cover. Ihfarm is on the right track with removing the pulley first and inspect or replace. My pulley was wabbling all over the place too. Many pulleys are damaged in taking them off the crank. I took one off just this week. Here is a little idea....not my own but I'll share it. When I took the bolt off the pulley wouldn't budge. I had some carpenters shims for doors and windows. I stacked a couple together and drove them between the rear of the pulley and the timing cover. Once they were applying a little pressure to the pulley I gave a few raps on the tops of the pulley groves on opposite sides of the pulley. Think of it like tapping at 3:00 and 9:00. The pulley moved just a little. I repeated this process until the pulley just poped all the way off the crank. It didn't take too long but the grill/radiator was out of the way on the jeep I was working on. Once you get it off just check the seal with your finger. Does it have one or is it crumbling. Is there a groove in the seal surface. Use a speedi sleeve to repair the pulley if the wobble doesn't bother you. Just my .02

Thanks for the advice guys. Gaffer, that is all super helpful. It seems I may have to figure out how to remove the grill and radiator to do this too.

Do you recommend using the paper or media timing cover gasket, or are guys using Right Stuff Black gasket maker? I’ve had very good results with RS Black on both my diffs.
