Cost and where to find windshield glass for 56 CJ5

    Hello again wise forum. 8)

    Making progress on my summer Willy’s CJ5 project. Next week I am going to be replacing the glass in the windshield. I removed the old cracked glass from the frame, and just painted it glossy black this weekend. I was surprised to realize how light the windshield frame was without the glass in it!

    Looks like I will go to the local auto glass shop and have the glass cut to fit this frame. Then I was wondering how some of you got your replacement glass . Oh yes, I have ordered a rubber windshield gasket. That is one of the things I am waiting on before going to glass shop.


    And do any of you have any internet sources that would ship me some glass for less than $100.00 ? What is the going rate for the glass ? ;)

    I just called the local autoglass place, they quoted me $75 if I dropped the frame off and $100 if they came to the Jeep.

    I just paid $129 friday for a piece of slightly tinted glass. Just the glass.

    Your probably better off just getting the glass locally because of shipping costs/breakage issues. ;)

    Any auto glass shop can do it. $80-$110 installed around here, if the gasket is reuseable. Add about $25 for new rubber if you need it.

    OK - related question/pop survey time.

    Regarding the w/s gasket. Is it supposed to be installed with the "locking strip" on the inside or outside?

    Dutch's was originally on the inside, but when I had the glass replaced they put it in with the strip on the outside. It didn't look right - the more "finished" side of the gasket was now inside the Jeep. It also seemed to offset the glass to the inside - I had to put a small bend in the hand-crank wiper arm to clear it. Always seemed to seep water at highway speed too.

    The glass shop said it was right....but is your w/s strip installed?

    The w/s glass I pulled out of the '71 had the locking cord on the outside. It was also white -- Is this stock?

    The one's I have that have the locking strip are on the outside.

    My 71 has it on the outside, its still original!
    Won't be for long though, the glass is frosting real bad and needs to be replaced.

    I would think when that little cord gets placed in the groove it presses the 2 halves out and into the glass and frame. It would make a better seal against the glass and frame.

    Just a thought. ;)

    Thanks guys, looks like $75 to $125 is the going range.

    By the way my locking cord was on the outside of my old windshield.

    What a great place to find some help on our everday questions about some great vehicles.

    Locking strip goes outside. It's a safety factor. If the locking strip was inside you could possibly end up wearing the windshield. All windows should eject to the outside of the vehicle, hence all locking strips should go outside.
