I replaced my transmission and clutch and now I have a really severe shudder when starting out easy in first. If I launch it hard there's no problem.

I know, "You got grease on the clutch disk"

So assuming it's not that or anything else that would require taking the transmission back out, I'm trying to eliminate other stuff.

Both engine mounts are newish and look fine.

I took out the stock T-14 and installed a rebuilt T-90 and Dana 18 twin stick. It all went together just fine, once I figured out the required bits to get the transmission mount back together. The T-14 stuff just doesn't match up.

One thing I noticed was that the plate and rubber isolator are much shorter in total for this transmission than they were for the T-14. I assumed I would need to make up for that by removing the 4 (two on each side) thick spacer plates that moved the crossmember down about an inch.

I'm wondering now if maybe I should have left them in and that the geometry change would be enough to account for it?

I'd like to hear from anyone who has done this T-14 -> T-90 swap in an otherwise stock 225 equipped CJ-5. Especially if you had shudder and managed to fix it.

    Did you re-surface the Flywheel?...............

I did not resurface the flywheel. It had hash marks from the last time it was resurfaced, no discoloration and no sign of wear. I installed a new pressure plate, disk and a correct pilot bushing. I cleaned the flywheel with brakekleen.

Do you have the "anti-chatter" cable from the clutch housing to the cross member? Is it tensioned?

Without it, the clutch linkage and engine mount motion can develop a feed-back loop as you release it, especially in reverse.

No! I've heard of it but mine doesn't have it. Sounds like something to look into. I had chatter in reverse with my old tranny sometimes. Never had it in forward though.

Oh, I should mention that I also installed an Advance Adapters chain linkage.

I don't have your transmission, but I had chatter when I put my clutch in. Chatter starting and lots of chatter in first when I let off the gas. It went away by itself in a week or 2. Friction disk seemed to just need to be broken in a bit.

That surface may look fine...........but they all get a heat glaze on them from the constant slipping of the friction materials........At the very least ruffing it up with an abrasive disc also helps.

As others have mentioned sometimes it does take a little time to seat in..................

I hit mine up before installing with a burr gun and some 100 grit. Not enough to gouge it but enough to break any glaze that might thane been there.

I am about to re install my transmission and have installed a clutch disk. I wondered about the purpose of the cable. How much should it be tensioned?

Just snug. The fingers the ball sets in on the cross-member are not real strong so a good snug is what you are looking for.

We did a new clutch in my son's Cherokee with a resurfaced flywheel and it chattered a little. I was worried and asked the question we have all asked at one time "What did I do wrong?" After driving it a week or so the chattering went away, all is good now.

I actually welded in a separate mount for this using an engine mount from a hurricane.. Probably not practical for most but it did work very good.. Mine had the shudder mostly in reverse and sometimes quite violently.. I'll try to dig up pics later..

I put back the crossmember spacers I had left out and the shudder went away. Driveshaft misalignment is a bummer!
