    Hello Folks,

I have the body off the frame of my 1962 CJ6.

There has been all sorts of funky strapping and boxing added to the frame over the years.

My read is that some cracks formed at the spring pivots, and boxing was added at these points, which then led to new cracks forming, which led to more strapping/boxing, etc.

Simple Question: could someone let me know what strapping / boxing was on the CJ6 frame as it rolled off the assembly line in 1962 please?

I can see that the frame is boxed from around about the front spring pivots forward to the main front cross member, so you can skip that part.

I can also see where they lengthened the CJ5 frame to make the CJ6 frame.

Just looking to establish the starting point for strapping/boxing as it rolled off the assembly line in 1962.

    Thanks,

    Tom

This is a 66 or 67 CJ6 that I took the wrecked body off of..........I'll try and find some more photos.............I also could not remember seeing anywhere on those frame rails that showed they were extended?

    That is greatly appreciated tarry99.

I see the frame in that photo had strapping along the bottom for the entire length.

If you have any other photos, yes please post them.

    Thanks,

    Tom

No spicecs in the frame rails from the factory.

The strap under the rails runs between the front & rear spring mounts.

No additional boxing from the factory.

I have a CJ6 frame from 1958 sitting out back. It is definitely not spliced in the middle (Like IH used to do with the Scout II (100"wb) and made the Traveler frame (118"wb) by splicing in a piece. The Jeep stamping for a CJ-6 is all one piece. Mine is not boxed much but is strapped on the bottom center like the one in the pic above.

The factory frames are not spliced. Many years have a strap on the bottom rail that runs from spring hanger to spring hanger (not all the way front to back). This may have been on the option list, I don't know (Heavy duty frame? Heavy duty springs?) Usually strapping is added to increase the GVWR. IIRC my '75 does not have it, but Jeep developed all-new frame rails for the intermediates, and they could have designed for the higher GVWR from the start. The CJ-6 does have a higher GVWR than the CJ-5.

I've owned two '66 CJ6's, neither one had a visible splice in the frame rails, however both had the strap on the bottom of the frame rail, this strap was ~1/8" thick and 1-3/8"wide. I don't recall where the bottom strap started and ended, although Tarrys' photo appears to show the strap running from the front fixed spring mount to rear fixed spring mount, this would make sense to me, since the strap on the second '6 had separated from the frame, not acceptable for mounting spring mounts. It could lead to a "significant emotional event" The second '6 is the one I still own, I replaced the original frame with a Commando frame of similar vintage. I feel like the Commando frame was superior due to it being boxed, and it was a near bolt on. IIRC it was boxed from the front crossmember to rear crossmember. After owning 20 or so Jeeps I have learned one immutable fact. Most Jeep owners have no reservations in folding, spindling and mutilating their Jeeps, those of you over 70 know what I am talking about. The OP's Jeep frame may have had the frame spliced to repair damage or make a CJ6 frame from a CJ5. Good luck!

    Thanks fhoehle, timgr, and wasillashack.

Looks like strapping along the bottom rail was the factory standard.

I have five CJ6, and had two more - earliest is a 1956 and newest is a 1968, none have a frame splice and if I recall all had the strap along the lower flange of the frame rail. I had a very early 1956 CJ6 that had the reversed front spring shackles - I understand that it was the same setup as a M170.
