Sticky has nothing to do with it, its shear rotating mass that tears the transmissions out of these things, that and torque multiplication. 1) You can find a v6 powered jeep, take it out and then put a 350 buick in its place with the only mods being to fix clearance problems with the radiator. This will cover the power issue.
    2) You can then get a warn overdrive to attach to the transfercase of the dana 18, this is a 25% reduction in rpm, this will cover the rpm cruise problem, then use a granny geared 4 speed transmission for the low gear needed to use it on the trail.

And buy the way you won't believe how much that 3' -4' driveshaft absorbs the abuse of the motor transmission to axle power problem to keep that car transmission togehter and last.

    Considered a CJ6? ;)

Go with a CJ6 and you'd have enough length for a V8 and 700R4...use a 3.15 kit in the D18 for a nice low-range and you have a nice gear spread...

That was my original approach, then I bought a 6 with a T18 already swapped in. The axles are 5.38's - too low for what I need. I'll be swapping in a set with 4.27's, and eventually going with a Warn OD for a pretty good spread of trail and street gearing.

I'd LOVE a CJ6, but I'd assumed that they fell into the same category as Scramblers, with regards to resale value. Clean Scramblers are 3x the money what a clean CJ7 is worth.

Plus, with a CJ6, there's the issue that we spoke about earlier, with regards to modification vs. restoration. I don't think I've ever seen a CJ6 in person in my whole life, so I'd have to think awful hard about swapping stuff out of one.

    Not that I wouldn't LIKE a v-8 CJ6, mind you... :D

CJ6s haven't acheived the resale status of a Scrambler. It's funny...they were made for years, but there are some pretty knowledgeable Jeep guys that don't know what a 6 is, OTOH even non-Jeepers seem to recall the Scramblers.

I've been tracking CJ6's for about a year now, and have seen several that were either already hacked/modified or had fallen into such disrepair that dropping a V8 into one isn't going to adversely affect the history of the world as we know it.

There's a pretty hacked one right now on eBay for $600....but it might be too far gone to save w/o spending a fortune.

    Before I bought my '64, I had a '58 that was just a rolling frame/body that I bought for $750, IIRC.

If you're serious about CJ6's just keep an eye on my CJ6 Blog, as I post any that I come across for sale.

Most of the options that were available on the CJ-5 were availalble on the CJ-6 up until 1975. Thus there are 304 V8, power steering, power brakes CJ-6s out there; you can have your V8 CJ-6 and keep it stock. Notably no 258/T18 CJ-6s though.
