Nice find, it's even right hand drive.

Have sort of stalled a little with some other projects underway but doing a little bit here and there.

Right now I could use some help.

I have tested the speedo by comparing it to a GPS reading and it seems to be off by about 40%

When I am traveling at GPS speed 60, the speedo shows 100.

So check my thought process please.

My brain say's the cable is turning 5 revolutions when it should only be turning 3 times to get the desired speedo reading.

I am thinking I will make a small reduction gear set that attaches to the speedo input.

If I used a 12 tooth gear that's driven by the cable, which is then turning a 20 tooth gear, then the ratio should be back in synch.

    Yes or no?

A few pics updates while here.

Got the front and rear bumpers painted and the lights installed.

    Then tackled the wipers.
I had already made the motor linkages behind the windscreen frame.
The arms were a little more fiddly.

Used off the shelf blade holders but made everything else.

    Action shot.

Room is at a premium when the screen folds down so tried to keep them as low profile as possible.
Has a single section of spring wire hidden in the back to provide the tension on to the glass.

And, a final pic of the finished engine bay.

Also made the cover for the wiper motor but will get pics of that another time.

I made the mistake of putting in the incorrect speedo gear on the D18 that I got out of a jeep that didnt have 5.38 gears and it read way off too. I changed out the gear and it reads close now. I looked at just going with a GPS speedo to remedy it and make it right.

I knew it would be a problem getting accurate speed indication using the Daihatsu 5 speed box going in to an original style speedo.

I haven't been able to find any alternate speedo gears for the transfer case, and I don't think any would be available with the reduction amount I need, so it's either make a reducer or go with the GPS speedo and rearrange the dash layout.

I would prefer to use an original style speedo though.

I think you're on the right track with your gear reduction, but you'll have to do a 3-gear setup unless you want it to spin backwards.

That thing looks awesome. Way to go.

You could go with a electric speedo and signal generator. Very simple to calibrate and accurate. Or the GPS . I have a electric on my '69 cj5 and like it very much. Yes the O.E. speedo would be nice.

Yep, going to try the reduction gear method first but if I can't get that to work OK then I will go with an alternate speedo assembly.
Down side is I would need to have separate fuel and temp gauges then as well.

Do off the shelf fuel non jeep branded gauges work OK with the Jeep sender units?

I am inclined to go with the GPS speedo versions if I do have to change speedos.
Seems to be the cheaper option. Not sure how robust they are but.

Did twig that the reducer needs to rotate the right direction. (y)

In separate news I may have a buyer for the CJ5.
Have a bloke coming to look on Saturday that seems keen to acquire it so while it will be sad to let it go it lets me register the 3B and not have the expense of 2 toys.

The gauges will work just fine if you have the appropriate senders. hats really important in a fuel gauge because they read differently. You need to see what the OHMS are that they use and match them accordingly. There must be an option to change the gears for the speedo.

I'm not that lucky johneyboy, it's a KM speedo not MPH so it's way off.
And your welcome to visit anytime flynavy but you will have to make your own way here.(y)

Got some bevel gears on the way to me so will try to make the type of reduction unit that attaches to the transfer case.

The threads on that are M22 x 1.5 and managed to find some nuts and bolts with the right threads as a starting point to make the housing.

Will be a while till they arrive so will come back to that issue later on.

Pics of the wiper motor cover.

With the windscreen folded down you can see the reason for the curved rebate.

Got the roll bar set up with the 3 point seat belt system in place but waiting on the engineer to come and inspect before I weld it all up.
Did the hatch covers in the meantime.

    Next, mud flaps and flares.

I am using a semi flexible plastic around 1/8" thick for the flares that is sold as a garden edging product, same as I used on the CJ5.
It's a cheap alternative and holds up well to UV rays from sunlight and scrapes and knocks.

It's 3 inches wide so gives approx 2 and a bit inches out board to cover the tyre width. Need to do this as a requirement for road registration here.

The buyer had a breakdown about 200 Km from his place.:n::(
As he got into Brisbane last night he lost the lights and the blinkers after 800 Km of travel.

    Fuses kept blowing.

He got them on again but only when the engine was off, as soon as he started the engine they would blow.

He thought he found a dodgy bulb in the original blinker and park lights but that wasn't it, then we thought the light switch might be able to be bypassed by energising the relay in the low or high beam circuits that I had installed as an upgrade.

So we were discussing options to bypass the switch when eventually he found that the wires that go to the left hand tail lights had worked their way loose on to the exhaust pipe and melted through some insulation.
When the engine was running and the exhaust vibrated, they earthed out the exposed wires in the melted bundle of wires.

Some electric tape over it and securing the wires again away from the exhaust and he made it home.:bananatool:

Felt terrible thinking I had sold him a dud but thankfully it was something easy to rectify once found.

Still waiting on the engineer to get here to inspect the seatbelts.
Was supposed to come yesterday but no show and no call, bit frustrating.

    While I've been waiting;

Made a little intake for the air filter.

Looks a bit like a periscope but hopefully it helps keep some rain out in the wet.

Then I wired up the LED spotlights.

Made a swing away rack to carry a spare and a jerry can plus have a storage box above the jerry but pics of that later when it's completed.

Hanging around waiting for some paint to dry I had an idea for a little bit of serious testing of the flex capability of the beastie.

Not really, just decided to play on a pile of dirt in the front yard.

    Right flex
    [IMG]
Good to check and see that the front drive shaft is not coming even close to the sump so that's a good thing.

    Left flex

The bloke who purchased my CJ5 asked about its fuel economy, gave him the standard answer that if he is worried about fuel economy then Jeeps in general and the CJ5 in particular wasn't for him.
He then stopped worrying about fuel economy.
