Yesterday, my Jeep died whenever I came to a stop. The choke had been sticking some ever since I got back from a week-long trip. So, when I got home, I checked it out. The choke was very difficult to move. I took the choke plate off and removed the choke-rod and piston. The joint connecting the piston to the arm of the choke-rod was rusted and not allowing it to move freely. I soaked it in solvent, hit it with a wire brush, put it back in, and now everything works fine.

    Now for the questions.

Why could cause it to rust up? Was it related to not being driven for a week? Is there something I should put on it for lubricant, or just keep it dry?

This is a Carter YF on a 258.

Probably it was Cd plated and the plating has failed. Just because of age. A light oiling will make it gunk up faster, but it's better than rusting.

You could also try some wax. It will prevent rust and wont gunk up as fast. The heat might affect it a bit though.
