Smokey, but it burns some oil. I cant keep it running to smell if it is fuel, oil, or coolant

Does the carburetor base gasket have the notch/notches in it for the YF vacuum? I assume you were able to get the metering rod adjusted as the manual calls for?

Any chance the exhaust is partially blocked?

Possible ive got/had mice in there but it ran fine then died all of a sudden. Thought it was from running out of gas, but it seems to be getting enough fuel.

I have not replaced the coil. Being 1 and 4 are every other in the firing order, weak coil cause something like this?

Did you check the timing as you had mentioned?

You said it ran good for a minute, so it can't be a crossed wire? Right? Just grabbing straws, here.

Did you flood it? If the plugs are wet, they won't fire.

I give up for now. I need to get a new battery which i will get this weekend and try again. May throw some new plugs in anyways. Im getting spark to the plugs, just not firing.
Ill make sure 1 is at tdc and check rotor position. Unless i got some bad gas:shrug:
Just need a couple hrs to go over everything in 1 sitting.

I've been picking the brain of one of the techs at work too.

I will drive up to Mason and Help if you want me to, maybe between the two of us we can work it out. Let me know, I am going to the cabin as soon as I can now that the Virus is in Detroit. I am getting a new truck next week, and getting out of here. Rick

My spark tester is a glowy orange thing. Seems bright like it always is on other cars. Getting a battery from work today so we will see if that helps any.

SG Tool Aid 36350 In-Line Spark Checker

This is what i have. I'll admit it works good as a yes/no spark tester. Never ran into a weak spark situation yet. Might have to find one of the old school gap style testers

I give up for now. I need to get a carb kit and try rebuilding it. Only thing that makes sense right now.
    Got spark to all 4.
    Good compression on all 4.
    Valves have good lash adjustments.
Checked timing at tdc and it should be close enough to run.

Either i dumped some bad gas in or the carb is plugged up somewhere

Be aware that not all rebuild kits are equal. Pay attention as to whether yours has a check ball and weight or just a weight for the circuit the has the accelerator pump before it. Also, is your needle and seat solid or rubber. May have changed over the years. I'd get with scoutpilot (Home | Old Jeep Carbs LLC) here. He posted on this thread above.

The Carter Kit I bought was mostly junk. After I got my carb done I could not get it to dial in, everything was wrong. I wound up putting all the original parts back in and only used the gaskets and accelerator pump, it still runs good. Good Luck
