    Hey all,

I am working on the carburetor (Carter YF single barrel) on my '77 CJ5 258 and I noticed something odd. The accelerator pump linkage drops so low during idle that it has begun to tear up the gasket that the carb uses to mate with the spacer just before the intake manifold. When the jeep is off it looks like it is in a normal position. Also, when I try to accelerate the jeep stutters and tries to stall out, but when I manually push the accelerator pump linkage upwards and then open the throttle wide open, it has no hesitation and does not stall out. Also, when I manually push the linkage upwards, I cannot hear a difference in idle RPM. What the heck is going on?

I watched a youtube video and adjusted the little screw that sits on top of the linkage assembly as follows:
    • Push down on the accelerator pump plunger till it bottoms out
    • Screw in the screw until it touches the linkage plate
    • Screw in one more full rotation
A little history. When I rebuilt the carb a couple of months ago, the plastic thing on the accelerator pump linkage was partially broken, so I removed it completely. I believe it is there to prevent dust from being sucked into the carb (let me know if I need to replace this component). After the rebuild, I adjusted the idle screw and the carb acted like normal. Not sure why it is acting up now.

Does anyone out there have any advice or ideas on how I can resolve this issue?
