I had my rolling experiment (Jeep) running excellent then it started having a dead spot off idle. I've read it's wise to ditch the Carter and go with something else. I have an Offenhauser 360 and headers on my 225 V6 and I didn't have problems until recently and excellent millage. I recently went through and tested/replaced everything except the carb so I know this is the problem and not the engine.

I'm going to try a rebuild first and see if this solves the problem. I'm suspecting after a decade the power pump seal is finally torn so I just ordered a kt from Rock Auto.

Question: So if the rebuild doesn't fix the problem, what's the best carb that will bolt up to this manifold? I'm leaning towards something from the wrecking yard because I don't have 300-440 bucks right now. I have a yard close to the house and they are super cool and let me hunt around. I need a target vehicle to narrow down where to hunt in the yard. A direct bolt up would be ideal.

    Thanks for your help.

Finished rebuilding the AVS and learning about the many adjustments. Kit was 40 bucks, a little expensive but included everything except jets. Took it out in the hills and it climbed without bogging or dead spots at all. I tried a very steep hill and still no problem. Jumped on the road and it easily pulled up to over 60 with the overdrive so I'm pretty happy with this carb. Super easy rebuild and I set it up according to the rebuild kit for a 340 V8 engine and it worked perfect. Only change I made was to use a richer adjustment on the accelerator pump. These carbs have are pretty neat because you can change the metering rods and adjust the air velocity flap very easily to eliminate hesitation on take off. I had the bowl vapor vent blocked off and it was a little hard to start after shutting it down at rest stops. I hooked up a hose and filter to allow venting and that fixed the problem. Hope this helps out if you have one of these carbs.
