hey guys ive got a 304 in a 74 cj. it has an edlebrock intake, other than that it is stock.

i had a 500 cfm edelbrock on it but it spit and sputtered and didnt run that well if i got on it. i tried a buddys 600 edelbrock and it seemed to run great..... but this just seemed like and awfully big carb. can my 500 be converted/changed to flow as much fuel as a 600 in a costly fashion???

what size carb would you recommend???

That was my thought. Your carb should be plenty big. My first thought be to pull it off and rebuild it. Get the carb cleaned up and reconditioned, make sure nothing it blocked, get into all the small ports with an air gun (disassembled) and make sure there isn't any gunk left in there.
Then tune it on the Jeep after its all warmed up.
