I tried to crank my 1985 CJ7 last Saturday, but never could get it to run. It acted like it was REALLY flooded. So, I raised the hood and noticed gas pouring out of the carburator. I removed to breather and saw a stream of gas shooting into the carburator about the size of a match stick. The stream continued until the pressure equalized. I thought to myself, "This can't be good?"

Looks like rebuild time, or maybe an up grade? The carb is the original for a 258-I6. Any ideas on a better setup, since I've got to spend some money, anyway?

MC2100 is supposed to be a good swap on there. I did it and really like the performance.

How much to spend? The most common junkyard carb is the 2100, although the Weber conversion is only ca $300 and works well. I'd go fuel injection now - either the Megasquirt or the Howell. The stock Jeep manifold post 1981 are pretty good. Don't mess with the stock Carter BBD.

Custom EFIs and some others (?) make a TBI kit where you have to scrounge your own Chevy TBI parts. These are less expensive initially but I'd expect come out the about the same to the Howell kit. If you want to save money go with Megasquirt.

There's also the Mopar MPI, which is more sophisticated but costs more then $2K for the kit. You can adapt the MPI parts from a '91-on XJ or YJ, but that's more than most can handle.

    going against the grain here
the BBD gets a bad rap because most guys don't understand and won't take the time to do the adjusments properly.
In Calif starting in 1981, we had the electronic version with the Fuel Feedback system.
Okay, the carb can develop throttle shaft leaks, but so can others.
Most problems were related to overtightening the base (warpage) and the air bleeds getting plugged to where it won't idle. (blast of air from air gun fixes that)
Also, others would overtighten the air cleaner screw/nut and warp the top of the carb.
The stepper motor can sieze up and the whole system can be difficult if you don't understand it. The metering rods can be fun if you don't adjust properly.
Mine gave me over 150k miles of service, and the original carb was on the truck the day I sold it.
I would keep what you have, and repair the BBD; not worth the carb conversion to me.

edit: that's not to say that I never had problems with the BDD

You might want to invest in a good fire extinguisher too!

Nope, it's not electronic, but could have fooled me when I first saw the stream...

Thanks for the info guys. I appreciate the comments.

Ran good when it ran. Seems like a rebuild would be in order. If it doesn't take then you could look around.

Well, historically, it has run pretty good. But, flooding on steep inclines has been a continuing issue. I'm thinking that I can use this new development to justify swapping to a better offroad setup.

MC2100's are easy to find. New ones are less than $100. Only problem may be finding an adapter plate, if required. (I haven't investigated that scenario, yet.)

    Brad,

Thanks for setting up the download. But, I'm having a problem downloading the file. I'll keep trying and (if needed) I'll PM you to set up another method.

    Thanks, again...
