Trying to give my 10" brakes an overhaul...I'd like to replace the self adjusting assembly with new parts. After much frustration, asking and searching I found this:

    http://thejeep.com/shop/HARD+PARTS/...:+1978-86+CJ+WITH+10"+BRAKE,+REAR,+RIGHT.html

It says this self-adjusting hardware kit is for CJ's with 10" rear brakes...I assume these CJ's had disc front breaks and 10" rear drums. So...my question is...can I use these for all four wheels front and rear? Any reason why they wouldn't work? They are different than the original setup - originally there were rods not a cable...

    Thoughts?:)

If I undersand your question correctly you are asking if you can use the self adjusting mechanism on your front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. If I understand correctly the answer is that the self adjusting mechanism will work only on drum brakes. so far as I know the disc brakes do not need adjustment.

They probably would work for your application, my 74 CJ5 uses the same cable setup on 11" drums. I would guess the main difference from 10" to 11" would be the length of the cable and the adjuster, most of the other parts would be the same.

    *Update* More brake adventures!

Well, today I bought the self adjuster kit at Autozone for the 1980 cj5 rear drum brakes with high hopes. I tore the wheels off and gave it a go...

Unfortunately, the self adjuster (the piece that presses against the star wheel) didn't jive with the holes on my 10"x2" brakes. The star wheel was larger than the stock star wheel. So, to make a long story short...I'll be taking them back to autozone for a refund...I hope.

So, I removed the old self adjusters...that don't seem to be working...and attempted to adjust them by hand. I seem to have done a decent job...however I think that the my backing plates looks pretty bad...some grooves and grinding...so I'll be looking for some new backing plates (11"). I'm going to checkout a junkyard in Wilmington, CA that specializes in Jeeps...maybe I'll have some luck.

What is the best way to prevent making grooves and scaring up the backing plates? A bit of lube...?

    Thanks the support!

    Nathan

Brakes live in a dirty environment, the pads that the shoes ride against will wear even if cleaned and lubed IAW the FSM. If the wear is minor, clean and lube and go down the road, if it is bad the shoe can hang in the groove during application cause erratic brake operation. To answer about the lube, wipe a thin film of high temp brake grease on each pad and do not get any grease or oils on the shoes.
