My ‘74 CJ5 had an 80s model z28 column in it and I haven’t been able to uncover any specific posts on this conversion or any GM columns other than some tidbits here and there. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Rosie's Steering Column.png G'Morning Charles...My ' 75 has a 1984 Buick GN steering column w/cruise & tilt . Mated to the Jeep Saginaw. Not an expert , by any means, but I did just recently replace the OEM 'Rag' coupler.
What are you in need of ? Also, as I learned early on.... Pictures, Pictures , & more Pictures help any of us help each other ! You also may want to to find a GM specific Forum. It really helps when you have a Jeep that's been built by PO's. Especially when you don't have a record of what they did ! ??? ..........Lockman

Thanks Lockman, I'm in need of electrical diagram so I can wire in my horn and direction indicator lights. Any other info is a bonus but the conversion seems to be functional. Yes Pics , I'm riding a tug on the ICW so next week after coming ashore I"ll take some and post them. Thanks 47v6, I didn't think to search outside the site . Good stuff. My Saginaw is shot and a PS Unit is in the near future. Nice Link zila thanks. Ill start posting some pics with all my repairs soon as I'm shoreside. TTFN

Pretty sure all the GM columns use the same electrical connections. In 1976, Jeep changed to a GM column (labeled "Jeep") for the CJ. If you look at the TSM and wiring diagram for a 1976 CJ, that sould provide a useful map for how the column connect to the Jeep circuits. Note that 1974 was the last year for the early-style wiring harness, with inline fuses, no fuse panel and no bulkhead connector at the firewall (the wires go through a big grommet at the firewall and are continuous from the dash to the engine compartment.) 1975 was the only year that had a fuse panel and bulkhead connector, while retaining the old-style tubular column with the big black wheel ("bus wheel.") There is a long flat connector on the underside of the column that connects the column to the dash. The wire colors may be different between Chevy and Jeep, but the location of each conductor in the connector should be the same. That this is a Camaro Z28 column should only be important in that it's a GM column - AFAIK they are all the same aside from colors/badges/etc. The PO likely picked this column for the conversion because it had the features he wanted (tilt) and it's a length and spline count that can be adapted to the CJ. Otherwise I think it's not anything special as a Z28 column.

' Cuz I'm presently working on mine..... I came across The attached Pics & Part #'s. Like timgr say's the Gm columns are mostly the same, particularity in the late 70's to the early 80's. I do see that that they changed after that, mostly because of the Delay wiper & Cruise features. My guess is it was probably just an engineering add on though? ---- God Speed ---- Lockman

When I fixed recovered thefts in the early 90 s we stocked a bunch of different length tilt columns just pulled the stove up one picked the length painted and installed as it was gm it was all plug and play. Would rebuild the stove up one to replace the one used. Some of the straight columns had the tilt bowl just no lever to make it tilt add the lever and they tilted. Vans come to mind as a tilt ready column.

Thanks all for your reply’s. What a world of knowledge here. I’ll get some pics posted as soon as I can on the current state of the column. The PO did a good job with the conversion but didn’t touch the wiring. I’d like to make some upgrades to the shaft i.e. Borgeson ujoints and couplings, a new steering wheel. Eventually power steering but for now a new (used) Saginaw PS swap w/ hose loop until I locate the bracket/ pulley to complete the conversion. The existing manual box is trashed.
Again, thanks for all of the great information.
