Buick 231

    I picked up a 231 to put in my M38A1. No info on which model or year vehicle this engine came out of. I do have the following numbers: Block 25506818, Heads 25506293, Intake 25506510, Serial # 402. Carb is a Rochester dual Jet. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, what are some of the common mods? I don't want to go crazy with horsepower - just a good reliable engine.

    Wow! 5 new ranging in price from $221.44 to $821.46. Do they really think they will sell? Used is reasonable at $24.99. Not reasonable is the highest used at $133.01. :shock:

    If all you care about is the information, the $25 copy will do fine. Maybe they expect to sell to book collectors? I would have said that a mint copy of this book has zero value as a collectible ... but maybe not!

    It might be available somewhere as an e-book for a nominal fee if you search.

    I agree. Sadly there was only a couple at that price and it quickly went up. A collectible paperback tuning manual. Who'd thought?

    A 231 with factory DualJet carb that is not electronically controlled would be late '78-'81. Around '79-'80 there were a lot of California equipped 231's with computer controlled HEI and DualJet. By late '81 most 231's were electronically controlled. Really not much needed. The Dualjet works very well off road in stock form. A mild camshaft is nice and good flowing exhaust is all that's really needed. Fwiw I run a 1980 non computer 231 in the '59-5 and it works very well. The hardest part can be finding a flywheel. You can have a 225 flywheel rebalanced for the even fire engine. I have a car flywheel in mine and like how quickly it revs vs the heavier flywheel but the heavy flywheel is nicer on trails and such.
