best snow tires ever

Hey guys i just bought a set of used bfg mud terrians 33x9.5x15 with about 75% tread.The local kal tire dealer has a tire siping machine that cuts a 1/4 " deep line across the tread every 1/4".These tires are the best combo i have used for deep snow and packed snow and ice they are better than studded tires.A little over $100 to cut all 4.Really makes driving on icy roads fun again.

The best now tires I ever had were Firestone town and country. They were so good they were discontinued. I could never understand the modern business practice of "if its good quit making it".

 

The best ice and snow tires are my Armstrong MET's 700-15. I can stop on and go solid ice or snow anytime/anywhere. I also have two loc rites in the diff's. R)

 

Looks like it would be worthwhile to buy the siping tool and do it yourself, if you drive on glare ice often. Here are a couple of good articles.

I have always like the 33" BFG AT on my 94 f150 4x4 has done pretty good in the snow in the past, and was planning on a set of 30-9.5-15 bfg at- for the cj when the tires that are on it wore out.

what do U guys think is a better tire for snow and ice during the winter the AT's or Mt's

For winter "on road" driving I really like the BFG AT. It has much more "edges" that work like siping for good grip on ice. They work fairly well on snow that's not too deep also.

 

I have a tire grooving/siping tool that looks like this.

It's a nice tool that can groove tires. With different cutters you can groove different widths, it's adjustable for depth, and by turning the head over it becomes a siping tool. I've seen them go for around $75-$80 new. I bought mine at a swap meet new in the box for $15

I love my Interco TrXus MT's in snow, they are the best tire I've ever driven in snow and ice hands down as well as performing pretty well in mud and rock.

 

Well Fellas, The best ones I ever had were some Cooper Sawdust tires. They actually had sawdust in the rubber. They had an agressive tread and "soft" rubber. On blacktop they were only good for about 5,000 miles. But in snow or slick mud/clay they held on. On ice they were as good as studded tires. I have not seen them on the market for twenty years or so. Like Wilson said if they are good products they quit making them. The scary part is I still have a pair for the back of my VW Baja. I store them in the root celler when not in use. I inspect them every winter when I put them on. They are at least twenty years old, and I do not drive very fast in the snow anyway. I will quit using them at the first signs of any problems, so they will never wear out. Oh yea they are used only on privet property so no problems for the rest of you folks driving in America.
Siping has always been a good thing to do to your winter tires. Most of us old farts used to always do this. Now-you all watch some one will take exeptioin to what I just said.

I just picked up a set of winterforce tires for my kid. Very decent snow tire. Very similar to a bilzzak. I would put a set on the jeep for the winter if they were big enough.

Sawdust tires sound interesting. I am sure there are a lot of little nubs sticking out.

As for AT vs MT, the AT is probably much better on the lesser snow that is compacted a bit. Where you don't really need a lot of dig. The MT will dig down and try to find something to grab on to. The AT will also fill with snow. That can also be a good thing in wet heavy snow. Snow actually sticks to snow pretty good when it is wet.

Siping makes a huge difference in a MT on snow and ice. It is about like doubling the surface contact area.

 

And I belive BFG stopped making the 9.50 version of the MT's...the kid down the road picked up a used set of 33 x 9.50 BFG MT's for his Jeep they are awesome tires!!

 

I think you're right. I have the 9.50 muds on mine and want to go to the 10.50 mud. In checking prices, I haven't seen the 9.50 listed anywhere. It's ashame because it is an awesome tire. The 10.50 will just fill out the wheel well a bit better and maybe help with hill climbing in the loose stuff.
