So i've decided to upgrade my drums to 11" all around ... Instead of buying from Herm, I'm looking on ebay for the backplates and the rest I will buy at my FLAPS. Can someone look at this link, I found some backing plates ...

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...354352&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1182

    My Questions/Concerns:
    1. They are both for the rear, but can I use a set for the front? I don't need to worry about an ebrake because I have a t-case brake.
    2. I thought it was a 6 bolt pattern? The first one has 5 bolt holes?
    3. Will they fit a 1971 cj5?

    thanks guys

Maybe some of the guys can correct me if I'm wrong but I think they need to be from a dana 44 rear axle. to bolt up with no mods.

The mopar's won't fit. You'll need something off of a FSJ, 70's CJ or or early Bronco. I got mine off a '76 postal jeep. Stay away from 11' jeep backing plates from the 50's or early 60's jeep trucks, they don't have provision for self adjusters.

These are what they should look like-

Thanks guys ... What I was thinking .... Buy the fronts as a complete set for $300, put them on and see how it drives. When I get more money in my pocket I'll do the rears ...

$300 for front drums?????? sounds kinda steep to me, disc conversion didnt run much more than that for me, although i already had the caliper mounts and cores for the calipers

Well .... They can get expensive ... I was looking at piecing them together but ... A pair of reconditioned backing plates are $100, a pair of drums are about $130 .. Combine that with all the other hardware (wheel cylinders, springs, etc) it can get quiet expensive fast ... So herm sells them for $300 with everything

if you buy the backing plates by themselves, you will need some additional parts that are not available from the parts store. In Boston, I suggest you try finding a donor vehicle on Craig's List or maybe through a local 4x4 forum like NEOW.

Neither of the links you posted will work. You need 11" backing plates from a Dana axle. A 5-lug Wagoneer or J-truck, an early Bronco, or an intermediate CJ-5 will provide both fronts and rears. You can use the fronts from a '76-77 CJ with all drums.

Many postals have 10" brakes! Remember when buying backing plates that 11" backing plates actually measure 12" across. The drums measure at 11" That being said, the self adjust 10" brakes off a DJ are still a great upgrade from stock 9", however the wheel cylinders and parts usually cost a bit more. Yes a disc set-up can run about the same as a 11" drum swap. Its up to you whether you want the disks for wet stopping or is this Jeep mostly a pavement pounder that will rarely if ever submerge the brakes in mud and water.

the postal I got mine from was a 76 or 77 I believe. And Auto zone had everything I needed to get mine together.

Also keep in mind that some of the 11" backing plates have a different mounting hole pattern, and you'll have to drill them to fit your axle flange. No biggie. See the left ones.

This is incorrect. The only parts you can't purchase new are the backing plates. Everything else was available for both the front and the rear brakes, even at Kragen/Checkers/Schucks.

E-brake lever? E-brake equalizer bar? Wheel cylinder pins?

The wheel cylinder pins are available. I have new pins on mine, but didn't purchase the equalizer bar since all four of my backing plates are front plates. After looking, I'd say you look for the equalizer parts used.

You are correct about the lever, but that's not something I'd normally loook for when buying backing plates.

I did purchase one set of backing plates off of ebay for about $50, the other set was a local trade

    Part numbers -

    H7137 Hardware Kit $5.99
    H2540/H2541 Self Adjuster Repart Left/Right Kit $7.99
    H2035/H2036 Adjusting Lever Left/Right $1.29

Shoes were pretty reasonable as well ~$15. Check in store for pricing and part numbers. The FLAPS websites are listing store brands only between $25-30.

Are you saying I can't drill those and put 'em on my 1956 vintage D44? I'm not sure what "flanged 44" means. I'll be seriously bummin' if I can't use these.
