My '62 CJ5 has a Dana 44 with tapered axles. What size is that axle nut? I've had it off for a while for rehab work but I think I took it off with a large adjustable wrench. I thought maybe I would borrow the right size socket and do it right putting it back on - so I measured it. I get about 1.456" (max). That comes out a bit more than 1 29/64". I don't think they make either that size or even 1 15/32" sockets. I converted to metric and it comes out to 37mm. Can that be? It would be the only metric thing I have found on this Jeep. One of my buddies has a nice set of large metric sockets and it only goes to 36mm. Am I missing something?

I've got the socket at home. I'll look tonight if no one answers you.

I think that rear axle nut is 1 1/4". I remember because I went out and purchased a 3/4" drive socket set just for it.

I'm "kinda" sure that my D44 had 1 7/16" nuts on it. Socket only comes in 3/4" drive at Sears, so I had to buy a non-ratcheting handle too. Still ended up using a cheater bar to get the castle nut to line up.....

I'm in the same boat as you, except for mine's a 47 CJ2A with the Dana 41. I found this write-up with pics - http://www.mightymo.org/Proj_D41-2Replacement.html - where it says that the Dana 41 10 spline axle is identical to the Dana 44 10 spline axle. In it, he uses a 1 7/16" socket (although it actually says 1 7/6" socket, but I think that's a typo).

And thanks to MOP for the Harbor Freight link. I've been looking for a 1 7/16" axle nut socket everywhere. Biggest axle nut sockets I've found are a 36 mm socket and a 2 3/8" wheel bearing socket. Already have a 36 mm socket, and it's definitely too small. Don't really feel like paying that much for all those other sockets, but I guess it'll have to do since I can't seem to find it anywhere.
