I'm putting new wheel bearings in a '79 CJ7 with model 20 axle and one-piece axle shafts. Upon disassembly the ends of the axle shafts have been ground off by the carrier - one worse than the other, but there's at least .025" missing off the end of the better one and the surface is galled.

I've been into a C-clip axle before, where the axle shaft thrusts against the large round pin that goes through the center of the carrier - but given the difference in design here and that it's not wearing well it doesn't look like that's supposed to be the case with the model 20. With mixed information about axle shaft setup on this axle, I'm really in the dark. Is any thrust in the axle shaft supposed to be transferred through the end of the axle shaft (like a C clip Chevy 10 bolt, etc.) or through the collar and brake backing plate out at the wheel?

Also, finding no markings (except 14732 stamped on the outside end of each shaft) on the axle shafts I can't go straight to a source for a replacement bearing, seal, and shim kit or be sure what the setup procedure is. Any help here? It'd be nice if the aftermarket shafts used original application bearings but from looking at my seals and shims vs. what's listed for OE I'm skeptical about that.

    Picture of the bearing/collar setup.

With the passenger shaft all the way in and the backing plate tight against the axle tube, the race still needs to go in a bit to tighten to take out slop in the bearing, or the whole mess needed to be a little deeper on the axle shaft so when the race is flush with the tube it's tight - but the bearing appears to be pressed all the way down on the step of the axle, so what gives?

There was a thread recently with a member setting up a tapered 44 and having issues. Turned out he had some off brand Autozone bearings.Changing to a reputable brand solved it iirc. A few thousandths can be miles.
