On my Ross steering box there is a bolt with a jam nut. Is that a way to tighten up the box? If so how do you do it?
I am gathering needed parts for a P/S conversion but don't have everything yet.

correct. Just back the jam nut off a little so its loose, tighten the set screw down. Not too much so things bind up, but just enough to take out the slop in things. Then tighten the jam nut back down.

Be sure to lift the front tires off the ground so you can cycle the box from lock-to-lock each time you make a **small** adjustment to the set screw. It doesn't take very much movement to make a big difference in feel. Go about a 1/4 turn at a time.

The first thing you'll notice is that the steering has a "hard spot" right in the center, when the wheels are pointed straight ahead. Back off a little from that point.

Also - some will tell you that you shouldn't adjust it at all b/c you can't possibly get it right without removing the box and having it on a bench. If you get it too tight, the box will wear out in short order b/c of the extra preload on the bearings.

I adjusted mine, but didn't notice any "real" difference. YMMV
