Nothing in a search or the first 19 pages of this subforum, so I thought I'd ask. There's a distinct possibility that I'll be picking up a CJ2A this week (don't know the year yet). It has the tranny and transfer case lying in the back, but no engine. I've got my '65 CJ5 with the F134/T90/D18/M51 PTO that I could put in it. I was just wanting to know, will the F-head engine bolt right up? What about swapping in my radiator?

I went to look at the '2A yesterday, and would have brought it home then but he couldn't find the title. He says he thinks his wife knows where it's at, so with any luck I'll be picking it up sometime this week. It's pretty rough, but worth saving I think. It's missing the hood and the front frame horns may be beyond saving, but the rest didn't look too bad. It's got all the data plates and a clean title, so I'm really looking forward to this one! Maybe I can even find an L-head engine to put in it, but would like to use the F-head while I'm looking.

The F134 will bolt up to the L134 bell, but it's too tall for the hood height. Thus, the 3B. You'll need to find a shorter carburetor for it to fit. IIRC the Holley 1904 can work, if you can find one. I believe you'll also have to use the engine mount plate from an L134.

Well, that's certainly a bummer. There's no hood on it right now, but I certainly won't cut a hole in a replacement hood to clear the carb/air cleaner. I guess I'll look around for a rebuildable L134. Thanks!

Might be able to clear the stock carb with a body lift. There are carbs that can be used to keep the hood hole free and at stock tub height, I beleive there are several pages on the net about it. Search for the Falcon carb.

And the stock radiator is a bottom mount, your cj 5 is a side mount, it will take some fabbing but it is doable.

    front plates changed
side drafts, and holley 1940 as well.
look for ford 170ci-200ci i6 they are the same flange as the f-head.
you should look at your needs when considering what engine to use. the jeep 4s are limited in power and are not built for today's highways.
if you are planning on a significant horse power boost to drive it like a compact truck, the f-134 is not the way to go
but if you want to putt around town on a sunny Sunday or you plan to use it mostly off the roads the 134 is fine.

sacrificing one working jeep for another to run doesn't make much sense to me. i would find a gm v6 or a ford ohc 2.3l the long term costs are less if you drive it often, modern engines use less fuel, the routine maintenance is less, and there is simply more you can do with 150hp

And there's the hangup... More than likely, this will just be a putt-around-town toy on the weekends, but it would be nice to be able to drive it to work once in a while (which is ~45 miles of freeway, each way). I'd love to keep it "original," but the expense involved may force some changes. At the moment, I'm keeping all options open.

    would you drive the 5?
the 134 can make it on the freeway, but you will be at 55mph.
you can try your route at that speed in your Daily driver and see what happens. most will fly up to your bumper, get real close then pass asap. an old jeep is better identified by the trucks and tend to get over early, it's the hurry up and wait people that will get annoying.
I did that until mine needed rebuilt, then decided i had enough. kept the old engine and will go back when I'm ready.

I would drive the 5, but will get rid of it if I get the 2A (only enough room for one project). If it made sense (which it doesn't now), I'd pull the engine out of the 5 and put it into the 2A. I guess I could always put a more modern engine in the 2A if I get it, and then rebuild a L-head at my leisure to put in it at some point.

I'm pretty sure I have one of those 1904 carbs layin around if you're looking. I was going to put it on my spare fhead and drop it in my cj2a project until I discovered the crank was no good and went with a V6 instead. I'll dig it up if you need it.

Thanks Mike; I'll keep you in mind if I decide to go this route. I'm going to call the owner of the 2A today and see if he's found the title yet...

Well, the owner of the CJ2A found the title and will be delivering it this evening; it looks as if this project is officially a go! Once I give it a thorough inspection and tear into it a bit I'll have a better idea on the direction this project will take. As for now, I'm gonna start looking around and seeing what "must have" manuals for these models are out there... I assume the parts book and mechanic's manual (repair manual) from Walck's are the major ones I'll need?
