limited slips/ pulling hair

    ok Ive been searching and researching the limited slips that are out there for my rear dana 44 30 spline. I have found the trac loks to be junk. powertracs were good but I can not find them anywhere for sale new. So I have narrowed my search to the detroit truetrac and the auburn pro limited slip. The jeep will be primarily street driven, we do get snow/ice/rain and it will see all. Im liking the detroit truetrac since its gear driven with no clutches to wear out but i like the auburn since its a little cheaper and looks to be a little better for when I would take the jeep on off highway adventures. Any advice from you guys who have either or have driven a jeep with either?

    Between the two you mentioned the true trac would get my vote. No clutches to wear out and they work well off road. Powerlocks are available new from Randy's ring and pinion although not as good as original. What gear ratio you running? May know where ones at

    I guess gearing would be nice to know. As of right now the axles have 3.73. I may stay with this ratio so I wouldn't need my OD. On the other hand I have 5.38's that I've had on the shelf for quite some time now awaiting me to tear into this project again. So honestly gearing doesnt really matter at the moment. I know the dana 44 split is 3.73 and lower and 3.92 and higher.

    Love my Detroit, practically bullet proof. On the otherhand I doubt I will ever drive it on the street in the snow.

    We have snow which is why I have an OX. I have had to many bad experinces with the others on snow and ice out here. I want locked and unlocked with no question as to which I am in.

    I live in north Idaho and we get plenty of snow.

    I wheel year round in a group of 15 rigs

    the true trac is a bad word here.

    In any kind of slipery conditions it wont lockup,
    unless you use the parking brake to make some friction.
    I have seen this firsthand over and over.

    For street driving the last thing you want is a icey road and a locker in a short wheelbase jeep.
    It will put you in the ditch very quickly.
    But it will help you drive out of the ditch to try again.

    A selectable locker is best as has been said.
    But if funds are tight then leave it open and get good tires till you can afford it...

    That’s my plan for the front. I love my PowerLoks off road but the one in front makes handling on road in snow/ice a real horror show.

    Tim, the quality of the casting, machining, and material used is nowhere as good as the original Dana/Spicer units. If you have them side by side you can see the difference in quality and when you pick them up there is definitely a difference in weight of the metal used. Not saying the Randy's units are not any good, but they are certainly not as good as the originals.

    My vote would be for an ARB. They are costly, but I really like the selectable locker idea. It makes your JEEP much more versitile in different conditions. As said earlier, an OX would do the same thing too. I knew I wanted onboard air, so the ARB made sense to me. PowrLoks are great too, but I have mine in the front so I can "turn it off" by unlocking the hubs when I'm on road in the snow. Good luck with your choice!

    So, I found Currie sells powerlocks. the picture looks like a factory unit. I'm going to call them shortly to see if they are actually factory or not. If they are what should I be looking to spend? They have theirs listed at $479. is that too much?
