how long can you not run a motor and still be able to start it cleanly?...i've had my 4.3 sitting in my project for about 5 years now...i haven't been able to work on it since i'm out of the country...i'm just hoping that when i get back to finish it up that the motor would still start up?...just curious...

i've tried spinning the motor with a wrench before i left and it still spins nicely...

Depends on where and how it is stored. I started an engine I had sitting after 6 years with no issues. I had it lubed up pretty good before I stored it, and spun it around every once in a while. Probably need to flush the old gas out of the carb.

I'm sure others will have suggestions as well, but in general - shouldn't be a biggie.

old gas in the tank is a bad idea to run through the engine
drain the tank and fuel lines and clean them then refill

maybe clean out the carb - take it off and soak it in carb cleaner... (at least that is what i would do)

I would pour some marvel mystery oil or a similar type of light weight oil into the spark plug holes and let it soak before you even try to turn it over. The rings will probably be stuck to the inside of the groves on the pistons. This can help get them to start thinking about flexing.

And when you turn it over, go slow. Might even turn it over with the coil wires off, just to get the oil flowing through the motor. When you do start it, let it run at very low rpm for a few minutes before you rev it up any. Let it wake up slowly. :>)

Watch the carburetor for a while when it is running. If any the rubber gaskets have gone bad , you might have some leaking gas. If you do, it is not all that expensive to buy a carb kit and rebuild it. Just want to be sure you don't crank it with gas leaking down on somethat could cause a fire.

Check your brakes, before you hit the road. You will more than likely have to refill it with brake fluid. Hopefully that will be all you need to do. If it was stored out doors in the weather, you will probably have some components that need to be replaced.

I have done this several times - based on recommendations of a friend who is a machinist at an engine shop... Most have been hit here.
    1. Drain old oil and replace with new filter before you turn it over.
    2. Drain and clean any gas components
    3. Marvel Mystery Oil, Sea Foam, or some sort of lube/cleaner into each cylinder - let soak for a couple days.
    4. Pull valve covers spin up the oil pump and make sure top end is getting oil - check pressure if possible.
    5. Put TBL spoon of MM in each cylinder and turn engine by hand.
    6. If needed put another TBL spoon of MM and turn with air wrench/drill or starter with coil un hooked.
    7. Change Oil and Filter. Put MM back in.
    8. Run it - change in about 200 miles and check filter for metal.

BTW - the V6's are a little different in that the 'break in' we used (based on their recommendation) was 2K to 2.5K for 20 Mins as the oil actually flows better on a tight engine at this RPM. Be sure to complete the 20 mins even if you shut down at 10 for a problem.

I agree with what has been said already.
I just started up a car that has been sitting for 4 1/2 years, started right up it's all on how you perpare it before it's stored
