I bought a new transfer case mount and was removing the old one from the cross member. The rubber pieces came off but I cannot get the metal "cup" to break loose from the cross member. As I was beating on it, I thought maybe it isn't supposed to come off. The new one looks like it replaces everything, though. So do I break out the torch or is it supposed to remain in place?

I just did mine and it was a bit confusing too. The cup is spot welded in 4 spots onto the crossmember. I couldn't see two different cups (inner and outer) on mine. I nearly opted to chisel the old cup off and spot-weld the new one in its place. Instead, I inverted the big bushing so that the cone end was facing down into the crossmember cup, and the cup end up against the transfer case. You have just enough bolt to put the nut a few threads...I torqued it down which compressed the bushing into the cup on the crossmember, then removed the nut again, put the washer on, and re-torqued. Seems to be just fine.

I'm sure there's another explanation for figuring out that lower cup, but I wasn't going to fuss with it. The bushing itself normal way does not fit into the old cup.

Sorry for the duplicate thread, jpflat2a, I normally search before I post but in my haste to get an answer, I didn't.

So if I understand correctly, these are actually two pieces?

This looks to me like another case where the torch used properly will solve your issue.
By used properly I mean just heat up the inner cup that is marked 'goes' until it gets to red heat, then let it cool completely. The expansion/contraction cycle will break loose the rust bonding the cups together and the inner cup will probably just fall out after this.

You could but on mine that wouldnt have been necessary...I took vice grips and twisted that inner shell until it just popped out. Once you get past the confusion its actually pretty easy.

I'm just glad I asked because I was beating on the outer cup with a chisel, fortunately it didn't break loose or I would be practicing my welding skills now. I'll try the vice grip way first but I have a torch if necessary.

Thanks for the advice. Sorry again about not searching before posting.
