OK, I'm trying to reassemble my D44 (finally!). I've got the seal, shaft, bearing and race installed on one side (left), and the race is quite a bit BELOW the surface of the flange. Needless to say, I don't understand how the bearing retainer plate and shims will work with the race below the flange.

Am I missing something here? I don't see any spacers n the drawings, and there wasn't any to begin with. Am I supposed to install both axle shafts/seals/bearings at the same time? Am I basically shoving the carrier/spider/case assembly over to the right, and I need to install the right side stuff to balance things out?

Oh, and how deep am I supposed to install the seals? I've got the left one installed, and I think it's about 1-3/8" deep, measured from the flange.

He'p me out here, I've never done this before. I'm "thinking" I need to bump the left race back out past flush a little, then install the right side stuff and go from there?

No, it doesn't. This is why I'm asking. All it says is "assembly is the reverse of disassembly". And this is supposed to a reproduction of the original Service Manual for Universal JEEP Vehicles". It's not a Chilton-type manual.

Do as you mentioned and pull the first race out past the flange and then go from there, installing the other side and see what happens. If there is a thrust block in there, as there should be, you should end up needing spacers in order to adjust it for the few thousands of end play needed.

Yep, did that and it worked. Dang slide hammer has paid for itself a few times now! Been partaking of the joy of shimming now, I seem to have gotten both ends down to approx. .005" end play. We continue......
