What's the consensus or personal opinions on putting 8/10 ply LT tires on jeeps.

Mine is a M38A1, just about all stock.

Reason I ask is when down at the picknpull a couple weeks ago to grab some Cherokee swinging pedals and booster for the DJ build, I came across a 1/2 ton chev with a couple of unusually good tires on it. When you find them in the yard, they're 15 bucks each.

The tires are 215/85R16s Wild Country XTX and are the 8 ply (not as common as the 10 ply). I have to take them off the 6 lug chev rims.

Yeah, I couldn't pass up the bargain (I guess) at that price and brought them home. Now, I'm not sure what to do with them:rofl:. I have 2 jeeps, the A1 and the DJ (the DJ is in the build process). The tires would fit either one of them once mounted on 16" 5x5.5 rims. On the DJ, since it's a 2x4, they could go on the back and wouldn't necessarily have to match the front tires in height.

But are they too much tire? I love the tall narrow look and find it to be the most efficient for steering, mileage and overall use that I find I need. But they have a couple extra (or more) plies in there. I think they'd look great on either rig and I could see their application on the jeeps but am concerned about the ride qualities.

If they aren't useful on the jeep(s), they won't go to waste as the '88 4x2 Suburban needs tires badly and these would work out just fine on the front of that rig. It's just an around the island rig, used for hauling camping gear and firewood and as a spare vehicle.

Another twist: I only got two tires so would have to get a couple more. Odds are they would be 10 ply as those are much more common. Would it be a problem putting a mix of 8 and 10 ply tires on a 4x4 jeep?

I wouldn't think mixing 8 and 10 ply would be a problem if you keep them on the same axle 8 ply on front axle and 10 ply on rear

Gunner: Same tires I've got on my '70, they work fine, if not riding a little rougher than the old 15's I took off of it.
