The bigger crack was about 1/4" total separation.

Crack repair was using JB Weld. About 6 hours after JB Weld was applied, I used a box cutter and gently removed the spill-over and excess repair material to reduce sanding. Let material harden about 20 hours then sanded total wheel with 600 grit sand paper and wiped down with paint thinner. Let dry in sun for about 30 minutes and painted. The paint I used was Home Depot Gloss Black Appliance Epoxy in spray can. Only time and exposure will tell on the durability but it sure looks better than it did.

Neato. There's a couple of You-Tube videos about steering wheel repair using epoxy putty. ... looking ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIEM7r_BRw0 This stuff appears to be a metal-filled epoxy like JB Weld, but with a somewhat stiffer consistency.

Tnx Tim. I will save this in case my JB fix lets me down. I did find a web forum on repairing old telephones. I believe the wheel and the old black phones are made from the same stuff (bakalite) and there was reference to using JB Weld so why not give it a shot.

Here's an article I wrote for my '60 Olds site on the repair I did. There's actually a pic of my '55 CJ wheel in it :). Still haven't finished the Jeep wheel...that stuff hardens up like concrete if you leave it long enough...DAHIK LOL.

I tried the same fix on my wheel. After about three years, there are some hairline cracks, but it still looks worlds better than before. I also used JB Weld, but the paint was black Rustolium. All in all, I'm still happy with the results. Good work, by the way!

So Nate--how long has the JB been on there and what kind of paint did you use? How is the durability of both? Tnx for the pic's. Great job.

Here's a posting I found a while back on wheel restoration for a VW. They are using a POR-15 epoxy putty, that he says works well, but doesn't bond as well as JB Weld. Generally they emphasize routing out the cracks.
