I'm not sure how to get the main shaft out.

front bearing retainer removed, rear yoke and tailshaft housing removed and I've got all the snap rings off.

Do i need a bearing puller to disassemble it? If so, any tricks for removing the bearings without one?

They can be a pain even with a puller. I'd try heating the bearing with a torch and see if you can use a chisel to carefully "wedge" between the inner race of the bearing and the step on the main shaft to get it moving.

    Thanks, I'll try that.

Should I be going out the front or back first?

I'd try the front one first. Sometimes that gives you enough play to get the rear one off a little easier.

I used a screw driver. I used the slot where the snap ring is to pry it out. And on the front, I taped it out from the inside.

    Bah.

I got the bearings out yesterday. Used a prebar in the snap ring groove. I also had them sitting with a shot of PB blaster for 4 days. Came off pretty easy once I got a grip on them.

I'm thinking this trans was rebuilt relatively recently before being removed, all the synchros and bearing looks brand new. I'm going to replace them anyway while I've got them out.
