So, I'm rebuilding this '72-'75 Dana 30 front axle to put in my '56. Going through all the new parts, I realized I hadn't bought any new axle shaft seals, the ones that go inside the differential housing, in the ends of the axle tubes. Off to NAPA, and these are what they gave me.

I've never seen seals like these, is this some new design? What's the bell for? Near as I can figure, the bell goes into the axle tube to act as a "guide" for pushing the axle shaft into the seal, or to keep you from knocking the seal out of place? Maybe to help keep crud out of the seal?

Yep. It's to help the axle shaft find it's way:)

Thanks! I haven't been home yet since I bought them this morning, so I couldn't check 'em out against the old seals and housing, etc.

Well, of course, they're the wrong ones. The OD is about 1/8" larger than the old ones. Just my luck, and par for the course. I even looked in the book with the guy, and it said '71-'86 or something like that. Makes my butt red.

If anybody has a part number I'd sure appreciate it!

<edit> OK, I just measured them, and the new seals are only .075 too big, not 1/8". Sue me. Still ain't gonna fit.
