Is the t98 already mated to a D18 a desirable 4spd or better off holding out for a t18 and later looking for those adapters?

You have limited engine compatibility with the T-98. If you want to use one of the engines that came with the T-98, like the F134 or AMC 327 or early AMC 232 or the 230 OHC Kaiser engine, then the T-98 is a good deal. I would not buy a T-98 unless it came with all the parts needed to adapt it to the target engine.

Should have said for either the F or L head motor. I assume if it is on a Fhead it would work with a L head as long as I use the f head starter.

You are correct sir. Make sure to get the flywheel from the F-head as well.
