Anyone have suggestions on finding the correct size cables for a cj6?

Should I just buy cj5 cables and extend them?

There has to be an extra 20" in there somewhere. Without going outside to look ... The parts book has a different number for the front cable (999 978 vs 979), so I presume that's where the extra length is. The front cable goes through a bracket on the body, which should be further back on a CJ-6. This would make the sheath longer on the CJ-6 part too.

There is an equalizer between the two rear cables (one to each wheel) that the front cable goes through. Both rear cables are the same for the CJ-5 and 6, and the same side to side.

As usual, the '76-up parts are different, with different lengths on each side. One of the few parts that carries over to the '76 is the equalizer between the rear cables, 322 2572, which may be a GM part.

Do you have the old ones? What parts do you have?

The cables from the rear wheels forward are the same between CJ5 and CJ6.
The difference, as Tim mentions, is the length of the front cable to the equalizer bar.
Also asking what old parts are you working with ?

Everything was rusted 10 years ago. I am sure I have the equalizer bar. I have 8" of what is left of cable, mounted to the cross member where the rear brake hose connects. In other words, I don't have any cable.

I was wondering if cable was still available for a cj6.

Answer above - Crown makes the cable; Quadratec is their largest retailer.

Is the bracket present on the body?

Apparently the bracket is in the same place as it would be on a CJ-5 body. This makes the cable core 20" longer. (All those spacers on the adjuster are there from the PO.)

This is what I have ...

Thanks for taking the time and pictures. After 10 years, everything is becoming a struggle having nothing to reference a part for positioning. I am still trying to figure out where the fill spout goes for the gas tank (and tank mounting.)

I can't tell yet. It is on it's side and the floor is gone behind the seats. I just put the front cable in the cart from quadratech. Found the rear brake cables on 4wd.com 67.5" long $23.00 ea.

    They are on order now.

    Thanks again.

    I really appreciate the offer.

So is the fuel inlet at the rear or side of the tub?
My intentions are to drop the engine, trans, drive shafts and gas tank in the frame. After that I can roll it out of the way. Next start working on the body and look for the rest of the parts I still have.
I have to do a lot of welding on the tub.

I can't figure out if this plate near the bell housing goes under the gas tank or engine.

I found the bracket on the body Timgr had mentioned.

Gas fill location on right rear of tube, between the back up lights and the tail light (missing it's lens):

Gas tank skid plate, the lower edge is the rear. It bolts to the rear cross member:

Front right mount, left is the same, bolts to hanger on the cross member:

That other skid plate you have must be for the transfer case. I have one in my shop that I think I removed from my '74 when I did the clutch seven years ago.
I bought this '73 to swap the body onto the '74 so never got everything back together.

    Thanks again.

Tomorrow it looks like I have to roll the frame and bikes outside to look for parts in the garage. They are mixed in with bike parts on some shelves.
