I'm looking for a photo of a dash for a '74 Renegade showing the ash tray and location. Thanks.-Terry

I have a 74 with an ashtray but its at my mother in laws where I keep it. I can get you a pic if someone else doesn't have one. Probably a week before I go out there.

This is my 73 cj5 basically when I got it. Might not be the same as a 74.

Basically just in the center under the dash.

As I recall, if you have the original ash tray, there is a set of holes for it. Likely those're the only holes in the area with the right spacing.

I had removed my factory ash tray on my 74 (still have it) many years ago If I remember correctly it was mounted under the dash lip just to the right of the heater control panel and just under the oil press gauge.

Good timing. Thanks Terry for the topic tread...I actually never have seen an intermediate with an ashtray. Only the cig lighter, which I have. Thought it odd they wouldn't have included the ashtray. I bought one on ebay for $20. Needs work though. Maybe if it matches an intermediate I can officially use it, since they actually had one on the dash. Any chance you can look at yours and let me know if it looks like this one. I think mine is not for intermediates and is 76+ CJs.

Thank you all for your input. My '74 does not have one, which is why I'm trying to track this down. Later CJ's had it under the dash basically below the heater controls. The '79 had it on the dash above the OP & volt gauges. I'm pretty sure I have a Renegade because of other features, graphics, swing away tire carrier, dash pad, visors, etc, etc, although it is white. I have heard beginning in '74 Renegades were available in colors other than the traditional Renegade colors. I haven't seen any definite photos yet but for some reason I'm not able to view 3b a runnin photo.
Also, I'm looking for photos of the original OEM swing away tire carrier. I'd like to determine if mine is factory or aftermarket. It may have been a tribute Renegade a long time ago.

I do not think any Intermediate jeep had a swing out tire carrier from the factory. So that is not a stock carrier. Two tire carriers were used. A side mount when the jeep had a tail gate. and another when it did not have the tailgate. I think the part is the same if I recall. Just mount location different. Here are two pics I had of mine that shows a stock '74 tire mount. This was on my jeep that does not have a tailgate.

It depends on how you define "factory." The Whitco "paper clip" carrier was "Official Jeep Special Equipment" as I recall. Pretty sure you could order any of this equipment for delivery with the vehicle. No experience with different dealerships, but the one I worked at would never do that. First, the factory was really sloppy about installation. Second, anything bolted to the Jeep was a theft risk in transit. Finally, the Jeep was more likely to sell if the customer could pick the accessories at the time of sale. And it likely made more money for the dealership to keep the installation labor in-house.

JMO - the Whitco carrier should only be used with factory sized tires or smaller. It's not up to the weight of a larger tire. BTDT.

As Chris points out, all the CJs with the sold back panel got the rear carrier pictured above. I think this is the same as the carrier used for the M38A1 in all but details. This carrier won't break, but it will break out the back panel welds where they join the body. Also BTDT.

Pictures of the Whitco - site:earlycj5.com Whitco tire carrier - Bing images

The Renegade package included the solid back panel in 1974. Jeep was pretty easy about what you could order (never say never), but a tailgate should rule out the Renegade package for 1974.

Later type Whitco, I'd say. Look at the carrier in the '77 dealer literature in the link above. Later than '74. The black or yellow Jeeps in the link above have the right carrier for 1974. Plus - may be obvious - a solid back panel Jeep has it's own tire carrier - no need for a swing-away. The swing-away is meant to allow access to the tailgate.

Note this is way off topic from the original post, and the mods may want to split it off.

Yes, that looks like the picture of the '76-up ashtray. The parts book has a picture of the instrument panel with an ashtray that looks like that. No picture of the part for '74. There is a listing with a part number, and it's different from the '76-up number. The part I remember is all steel, with a shiny black enamel front that is mostly vertical with a curved-under bottom edge.

I have a Valley Industries carrier too. Mine had the same setup as yours, Terry. Just the horizontal bar and a hooked shaped bolt that goes through one of the lug holes. It looks homemade but I think that was actually the way they came. I thought it was too flimsy so I made my own mount.
