Is the bottom of your fan shroud open? It’s hard to tell in the pictures. What kind of ambient temps were you looking at?

Good eye Kyle! Bottom of shroud is open. the fan is below center so I never did anything to finish it. I'll check my t-shirt drawer for material. It was 90 out maybe 95. I'm not sure how that compares to the Rubicon but I would want this to handle the typical Rubicon and moab trip but I'm not shelling out for a new radiator before I have a rig capable of those trails. Power steering will definitely be first.

Rubicon can be as hot as 90 some days in July. Average temp is probably around 80 degrees up that high. It will naturally be hotter in the lower elevations around South Lake.
What's your fan blade count? You might not have to close in the shroud if you can increase the air capacity of the fan.
If possible you might move the fan out of the shroud a little. We always try to get the fan half in, half out. I realize it's not always possible to do so.

So maybe I'm missing something, but if you suspect a dead tube or two in the radiator, wouldn't that be the first thing to fix? Looking for other solutions seems like chasing your tail.

I don't believe this is a surface area issue as much as air and water flow. It overheated at idle 650rpm with no throttle input other than the idle air control. just very low speed and technical stuff without a granny gear

The fan is a 5 blade flexalite, 15" maybe

If you can fit one, a clutch fan would help quite a bit.

    Time to check In here.
I was able to do a few days hard wheeling without issue. Highest temp while running was 210f, I opened both heater valves for the trip normally I shut them in the summer. I also adjusted my driving style a bit, I made sure to always use plenty of throttle to keep the fan spinning. :twist:

[IMG]VideoCapture_20220911-195444 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

Made a flat fender but it's the wrong sort of flat.
The spring got inverted but I don't think that will happen so much without hitting a tree.
[IMG]20220909_182346 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I mangled up the drawbar strap real good. You can kinda see it in this picture. Elsewhere in that picture is a log between the rear tire and frame...
[IMG]20220908_171557 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I had some noise from the fan and noticed the motor mounts had broken welds where the mount is held in the slot. It is visibly out of place in this picture from before the trip.
[IMG]20220822_133309 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I had a dent in the passenger fender from a rock st rush springs ranch. Now the driver side matches.
I had a twist on the outboard driver side of the bumper. Now the passenger side matches.
The loose tailpipe weld is now completely broken at the muffler. It's the thru tube and has a hanger so it's zip tied out of the way.
My heavy stock style covers 1/8" front (d30 cover) and 3/16" rear (Rubicon 44 front cover) held up well. The rear took a direct bump on a rock.
My boat fuel filter did the trick! I put 6 gal of gas in Thursday before hitting dirt and it ran out this Monday during lunch on a flat and level area. Never had a hiccup on the trail. Sometime over summer I did get the vent in a more upward slope which helps.
The glove box I made umpteen years ago was removed and a new one will be made to enclose the tbi computer, relays, and obd port in a sealed false floor/rear.
    Rollbar sandwich plates need made.
My dual reservoir master cylinder is still on the bench :steamed: but I've decided to tackle that with power steering since the exhaust will need to come out.

Dual reservoir master cylinder got held up by physical fitment and a lack of motivation to put the rig down for a while.

I'm basically to the point that the ross steering box is toast. I can't really turn left and that lead me into the tree. I plan on the Saginaw 800 box with 3/4 shaft all relatively low to a double at the base of the column. Brass bushing at the base of the column and 3/4" heim joint to support the shaft near the motor mount. This might snowball into a tie Rod flip so I'll have to compare Pitman arms and box position with both routes in mind.

This is the part where I need some ears... see I have the snowplow that I use maybe 3 times a year. My thought is to use the one pump for both plow and steering by having the plow controls on the steering box return line. I've seen it done years ago, Does anyone have experience with running both systems on one pump?

I think that was similar to an old Fisher plow set up system . You may want to start looking there ?

Sounds like it is common practice for the locals to tap into the return line for there pickup bed bale spears (yes we drive around with 5' steel spikes on the rear bumper)

So I'm gonna roll with the power steering on this thread... I'll do the traditional 800 series box but I will need a remote reservoir for the extra cylinder volume. The box will be mounted relatively low.

    Now for a parts list...

Steering Box (A1 Cardone 27-6537 Remanufactured Power Steering Input Shaft Diameter (in): 0.80) $216
    Pitman arm
    Pump
    Pump bracket
    Pump pulley
    Accessory belt
    drag link and ends
    Tie rod and ends
    High pressure hose and fittings
High pressure to plow valve and fittings
Low pressure return line and fittings
    Low pressure reservoir and fittings
Reservoir (24oz minimum) with cap and remote vent
    Spud shaft (fabrication needed)
U-joint at Box to 34DD (order when Box is verified) $35
    34DD shaft under radiator support
3/4 heim joint at motor mount $16
    34DD to 34DD double U-joint $65
3/4 DD stub at base of column (fabrication needed)
Brass bushing for column (fabrication needed)

Let me know if I missed anything. I might need to flip the tie rods at the knuckles. 3/4" dowel and whatever tubing is laying around will be used to mock fluid lines. I'll try to add part numbers as I go.

I drove the jeep to work after lunch and tooled around town a little running errands. I managed to get a nice low speed death wobble a block from home. Lady on her porch watched and said my passenger front wheel was "jumping up and down"... so it's going to the dog house as soon as possible. I'll put the frame on jack stands and tell it to turn and cough.
Hopefully it's nothing special but I do need to address the engine oil leak which might require the motor to come out. If that happens it's definitely time for the dual master cylinder.

    Additional notes from today:
I took the highway back from lunch, still has the high rpm issue which I am thinking is timing related. When applying the brakes hard it pulled right. After work I noticed it was having trouble keeping it's nose straight. Sort of darty but more of a inconsistant pull off center. When I accelerated from a long light before the wobble it acted like the front brake was slow to release and it barked the rear tires a bit. The brakes feel softer than normal but fluid level is good.

Well this should explain the episode of death wobble...

As you see all the ross stuff is worn out. I'll move the motor off the box and pull the column out, I'm done. Time for a new shackle and bushings with drilled bolts. I need to replace the u-bolts so I'll look at making high clearance bolt plates

Edit: I also seem to have tweaked the skid plate on something, I'm thinking I can make some additional mini crossmembers to support the belly. It's more noticeable looking from the front.

I started chasing the leak on the rear of my 4.3
It's either this plug above the filter, the oil pressure senders or a valve cover:

[IMG]20221024_003014 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr
[IMG]20221023_223512 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr
So everything got out of the way

[IMG]20221024_001623 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr
[IMG]20221024_002957 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

I'm not sure how I feel about this worm (it hopefully doesn't matter) but the wheel is definitely bent and the shaft might have a slight curve.

[IMG]20221024_004237 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

My driver side exhaust will be in the way of a DD shaft but that can be adjusted.
Single reservoir master cylinder is out. Brake pedal is slopppppy. Pulled the mechanical oil pressure guage. Drag link and column are out.

    Time for a bath.

I was hoping to be plowing snow this winter with power steering but with the speed of life, I think I'll be lucky to be ready by summer

I hate how this is half updating a to-do list and me crying about my problems ...
But it does help me stay focused on goals

I've got a few irons in the fire right now. Seems the only regular time I have to tinker is while I'm home at lunch for the dogs to tinkle.

    Updating the list:

    1. Engine oil leak (likely rear main or pan)
Leak is from plug between pump and filter boss.
Nope... seems to be the oil pressure sender T on the lifter valley.

Suggestions needed, i pulled the extra oil guage off the dash and now without the T my f-134 oil pressure sender is too short to thread directly into the top of the block. If threadded into the 1/8"npt hole it is hitting the intake. I need to either stack short male and female unions, buy an extension, or find a longer reach sender.
I'm thinking a longer sender would have the least likelihood of leaking?

    2. Dual reservoir master cylinder (stock drum/drum split reservoir with residual pressure valves removed and remote filler)
It's feeling good to get real progress on this one:
    http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/154162/

3.Electrical fun (popup camper has trailer brakes reverse lights and house battery)
Hoping to move the rear chassis wires to inside the tub with trailer brake controller pigtail and transmission reverse switch pigtail.
I forgot I wanted to pull these inside the tub... all that crap is pulled loose so I'll see about drilling a hole in the rear to pull them inside the tub. I do have a brake controller pigtail on hand with a 30 Amp breaker for the house battery and a 20 Amp breaker for the brakes. I'm really tempted to go to flush mount tail lights since one got snagged.

    4. Hand throttle on shifter or dash.
Nothing started but will be a choke cable on dash pulling up on a throttle stop.

    5. Upgrade steering. Forget simple and reliable... I'm done fighting this, I live in town, I drive around town, I have a snow plow and I want the significant other to not hate this thing. We are going with either a YJ or a later Monte-Carlo box. Metric fittings for banjos on the box, the snow plow valve after the box, larger remote reservoir, then I'll fab a bracket for a chevy type II pump or adapt the typical YJ pump. This is gonna be a relatively expensive endeavor so it'll take some time.

    6. Replace muffler,
These things are shot but with the brake and steering mods I'll ditch the true duals and bring one bank to the other and use one muffler. Longer term goal will be to take the exhaust out the rear with a water crossing in mind design that I have not thought about yet.

    7. Remove excess leaf from front, make low profile u-bolt plates. I started on this, it's drawn up but to recess the nuts spreads the bolts away from the springs and makes a big ol can of worms on the front end.

    8. Fix smashed rear corner (darn rock)... meh
Make that "smashed rear corners" I have 12ga plate for em when I get there.

    10. Motor mounts (done but might need adjustment) yep they are messed up. Add transmission and transfercase mounts to this.

    11. non bald tires, I got a 2nd HD 16" wheel!!! The other two are light duty 16"

    12. Air source,

    13. Rear traction aid (done)

    14. Front traction aid push this out till next year but a lock rite would be good.

    15. Weather enclosure for kids. (High priority per spouse). This is part of the little models, I'll eventually extend or copy the bestop from grant into a traditional canvas enclosure... but made of vinyl and with bug screen/ windows on the rear panels (or at least that is the dream)

    16. Fuel filter vent and electric "scavenge" pump, I don't remember the issue on this since I made the filter vent more vertical.

I highly recommend grabbing the entire steering setup from a CJ, YJ, or just about any older GM vehicle. It'll save you some headaches and lots of money. I (initially) have less than $300 in mine.

Re: crying about problems, I consider it to be more along the lines of venting. Keep chipping away and eventually, it'll be "done".
