I took the junktacular "hitch" off and plan on a ball/pintle combo. Just in case the dodge breaks down and I need to tow it with the JEEP. R)

Is this stock minus being all bent up?

This is a pic I grabbed somewhere else which is what you normally see.

I think the tank has always been in the back, which is why my drawbar lays flat above the tank vs. vertical like pic above.

The side fill location looks factory blocked off and there's not really room for a tank under the seat.

Buuut the fillneck doesn't look right and the skidplate is too big for the tank and has a foam pad taking up the gap, about 1.5". Nice poofy ride for the tank I guess. :) Tank is about 15 gallons I think.

i have a parts 70-71 with the rear tank and drawbar, and the drawbar has relief cuts in it for the tank. yours might have been either homemade, or repaired poorly.

The fill neck is somebody's ghetto-fab replacement. Too bad - those parts are hard to find.

There were two styles of draw bar from the era, either as a complete unit (pintle-ready draw bar) or with the pintle plate separate (draw bar sans pintle plate, and pintle plate). You have the factory parts for the type 2 pintle plate. There should be a reinforcement channel that fits tightly inside the rear crossmember. The mounting plate should be flat with large spacers between the angle brakcet and the plate.

Your fuel filler should have been flush with the body with a rubber grommet around it. Ditto for what Tim said about your pintle plate.

Unca had and interesting post, started my morning off with a laugh. "What the...?"

Notice my tank has provision for a fill neck and also a smaller return tube or whatever it is but it's blocked. Shouldn't it go up to the fill neck? I could probably do a better job of a ghetto fab if someone has a pic handy, or I'll find one.

That is some nice fab work. I think they might have had too many  Good luck with the pintle combo. I always liked the pintle combos.

Yeah, lots of too much  on this JEEP. I don't drink, so it should start looking a little better as I go through it. R)

That extra tube is a vent that goes to a bulkhead fitting in the vertical part of the fill hose. Both the bulkhead fitting and the filler neck are only available from a wreck or parts car, AFAIK. Suitable donors are CJs from mid-70 through 1975. The hoses are available as new aftermarket parts though.

Look here http://trailforge.com/TSM/Section_04.pdf at figure 2. The vapor recovery plumbing is different in '72, but the filler neck is the same as what you have.

I've recently completed similar work on my '71 R2. I've seen a factory diagram of the diagonal supports for a pintle hook with the rear tank, however it wasn't important for me to use a pintle hook. I just used the drawbar from an intermediate, which includes side brackets that fasten to each frame rail. I also replaced all my fuel line hoses and rear body mounts.

Well, rats, I was going to include a bunch of pics, but ever since this site got overhauled, I can't seem to get it to work like it used to - darn it! I used to have "post attachment" privileges, but now I don't.

Somebody help this man post pics!

Where do you have your pics stored? Online on on computer? I like photobucket...

Does your drawbar lay flat to leave room for the tank like I presume mine does?
