I'm having a local guy setup the diff in my 1956 D44 rear end.

He discovered that one of the bearings just fell off the carrier/case. Bearing surface was worn undersized. mehh

I calls up Randy's R&P, and orders me a new one.

Wrench tells me the new one has larger bearing surfaces, the new bearings I have won't fit. :?

So I go over and mic the parts, my original part mic'd at 1.690.

The new bearing mic'd at 1.6885. This is a #25577 bearing. .0015 interference fit, just right.

The new carrier/case from Randy's mic'd at 1.7985! The box it came in says it uses a 25590 bearing. .1085 difference!

So, my question is, is it possible the new carrier/case is for a later model D44? A D44 isn't just a D44? Everything else about it looks the same. Randy's was closed for the weekend so I couldn't call them. Grrrrr.

They upped the carrier (case) bearing journal size in 70 or so, and all the new aftermarket units use the larger bearings AFAIK.

You have to be specific on the parts that get ordered - one of the things I found out when I had the OX lockers installed. I got lucky and the Diff Shop down here knew what he was doing and got the right parts the first time.

it's the tapered vs flanged axle story
just tell them what axles you have
different bearings for the different axles

I DID tell the fool what it was. I was VERY specific that this was for a 1956 WILLYS CJ5, offset diff., tapered axles, etc., and not a later one. I'm not getting a very good feeling about this, I'm thinking I'd be better off taking the old one to a machine shop and just having that bearing surface knurled. Folks have been doing that for many, many years. I should have just done that to begin with.

I'm hoping that if Randy's can't get me the correct one, that they'll at least take this one back for a refund. Nothing's been done to it except for putting a micrometer on the bearing surface.

On a Dana 44 10 and 19 spline diff cases used one size bearing and 27 and 30 splined side gear diff cases used a different bearing. Just tell them your spline count.
Just looked at Randy's site and they don't have a listing for anything less than 30 spline. Probably why they sent the wrong parts.
Quite a while ago I couldn't find a new diff case for a 10/19 spline axle. Used was all that was available. Might try and find a good used unit. Probably be cheaper too. Let them know what gear ratio you have, you'll need that info as well.
