What do you think about this build recipe?

    Just picked up a beat '71 CJ-6 with a brand new 225 V6 and worn out/broken/missing everything else. It runs and drives and is fun as-is, but I'm thinking about building it:rofl:. Goals are cheap, tough, not too much work, and room for the family.


    I have the leftover one ton drivetrain from my '88 K5.

    TBI350/TH400/NP205/ one tons 4.56, crossover, hydraulic assist, etc., your standard 1 ton build.

    I'm thinking about keeping the 225 in the Jeep to keep it light and break-resistant (I break stuff a lot) and run a 465/241 behind it with the 1tons. The 465 should bolt to the 225 bellhousing. Would have a crawl ratio of about 78 and I have everything already. 38" XMLs on narrow wheels = poorboy beadlocks, box the frame or build one, YJ or chevy springs SOA, full cage, inside the frame steering box. Sounds easy....

    I'm on the fence. It's a cool stock jeep but if I leave it stock I at least wanna upgrade to a dana 30 front. that's a few bux for the 30, a few more for a posi/gears/setup, and then I think shoot, I have a perfectly good Dana 60 right here. Sure, If I just stuck it under the Jeep as it is, it would tear the Jeep in half, but I'm the foreman at the family machine and weld shop so if I'd just get off my duff...

    I'd keep the CJ6 semi-stock and find a cheap YJ for the one ton stuff.

    x2 THe YJ stuff is better to build a hard ridding off road jeep. The 6 is a good capable jeep in close to stock form. A little lift, some 33's, front disc'd D30 and a cage. You are good to go with a nice, realiable DD or fun trail jeep.

    X3 on keeping it stock.

    If you go the build route however I think you are limited to either a Dana 20 or 300 xfer case because of the width of the frame rails, and your need for a centered output.

    There are plenty o' YJs out there that are begging for a second life.

    But YJs are ugly, and have less interior space. :)

    yep I agree. I kinda regret building my 6 up the way I did, kinda, it never would have served me as a DD and a serious trail rig in stock form. Think it through then do what makes the most sense for you and yours :beer:

    1 ton axles are wasted on a 225 IMHO. Save them for V8 power.

    So you're saying I should put the longer AMC era sheetmetal from my '81 on the front and run the V8 from the K5?:)
