    Hey everyone,

I just joined the site after lurking some. I have always wanted a Jeep since i was young but finally I have been officially been bit by the Jeep bug.

I am in super search mode.

I am looking for a CJ6 with a :v6: and was wondering what would be
the perferred tranny, transfer case, axles with this setup.

I am wanting to keep it stock as much as I can (definately do not want to
modify it in any way that could not be reversed) but would not be against
switching out to a more perferred tranny, Tcase or axles as long as they
    are period Jeep.

I just dont know what is good, what is bad and what is the duck's guts.

If someone could point me in the correct direction or just deluge me
in information in this post. My skull is open and my ignorant brain is
ready to absorb knowledge like a sponge.

Thanks in advance, Tim in TN

--------my first Jeep I looked at last week---------

Almost 20 years ago I worked delivering orders for a tobacco warehouse and there was alittle Willys jeep in a caged area behind this one grocery. I acquired about it several times and the history was one of the store owners had it custom built for duck hunting and it had a '50-'60 model 283 ci Chevy small block in it.

Fast forward almost twenty years and when I started looking locally for a jeep someone told me about one they saw near my house. ( I live in a different county now). I went by and my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw that tell-tale custom hood. The old guy that owns it now had been a deliveryman at the store as well and was able to buy it when the family decided to sell it. He wants $2800 for it (seems a little high) but it is a 2 seater with custom hardtop and not big enough for my family.

All jeeps before 76 are very stout, durable vehicles that are able to take more abuse then you. You can't go wrong with any of them. I don't like 76+ years because they all came with weak rear axles and too many vaccum lines/ electronics/ emmisions for me to spend time figuring out. I like it simple and reliable. As they progressed even more, they generally started to come with weak drivetrains. This is all my opinion of course.

Unless it's been swapped you'll have a Dana 27 front axle, D44 rear axle, T86 or T14 three speed and a Dana 18 transfer case with the V6.

All are fine and very durable and many of here can help with the various aspects of care and maintenance of them.

V6 with a T-18 4 speed swapped in. Keep the stock transfer case and axles. 1" lift and some nice 31" Super swamper Radials.:)

Thanks guys, thats just they type of stuff I was wanting to learn!!

Windyhill, what vehicles were the T-18 4 speeds commonly used ? Is it a
    direct bolt up ?

After some reading I have done, I have another question...

What do you guys think of the T-98 4 - speed tranny ?

    Thanks, Tim in TN
