I most interested in this CJ 5 which looks in pretty good shape. The VIN is 57548 125184. I was told that everything is original, but I have some doubt about thr engine.

How can I make sure that the engine is the original ? What should the engine number be ? What should the casting number (just above the oil pan) be ?

    Many thanks.

You should have the Kaiser-Willys F-head 134 cid 4-cylinder, aka the F134, pictured above.

If you want matching numbers, I don't think they exist. There has been some discussion of this before, and I recall that the range of block numbers might roughly match the year of the Jeep, but they don't "match" in the sense that some passenger cars match.

The VIN also does not tell you anything specifically about the build date. We have a database of VINs that you can use to narrow down the build date, in a sticky thread at teh top of the forum.

    hth!

The engine in the Jeep is most definitively a Huricane but the number is 4J 27901 which indicate t o me that is most likely an engine coming fron a 1953 3B not a 1961 CJ 5. What do you think ?

Could be. I don't know where you are looking for this information, but I expect it's correct. It doesn't matter to the function or value of the Jeep. If the engine was rebuilt at any time, the rebuilder could supply a functionally equivalent engine but the core could come from any vehicle. The owner may think it's the original engine, even though it could have been swapped out for a rebuilt engine at some point.
