Alright finally digging into the cj5 for the first time today. I’ve had some really built yj’s as well as built land rovers. The idea with this is going to be a fun family project, a Jeep we can hop in and just drive around town. Not looking to build a trail truck this time.
    got it titled yesterday.

Today I broke it down to begin the build.

Currently going to get this frame cleaned up, get new everything suspension wise. Looking to source a Mercedes OM606 then figure out what tranny and transfer case will all work together. Open to suggestions..lol.

Rollin' coal in a CJ5 will be very interesting build to watch unfold. Check with the guys on the diesel discussion at PelicanParts. Equal knowledge on Mercedes diesels over there as these guys have on Jeeps. Someone may have one to sell.

I would look at millennium falcon's CJ5 build for inspiration. He also has a few YouTube videos with his Mercedes cj5,
    VW flatty, and Buick cj5.

1973 Jeep CJ. Title matches the data plate, but obviously its not really a 73'. Im guessing the data plate and title were from another jeep in the past.

Picked up a OM617. The 606 was going to be too expensive, and it may be too long. This is the 5 cyl variant.

There's quite a bit of difference in the power output between the OM606 and 617, right? Will that make a difference to your goals for the Jeep?

Love that engine, have one sitting in my garage right now, attached to my '84 wagon. Some parts are becoming hard to find (or impossible new) but if you have low enough mileage that engine would last. I think someone did a Toyota 617 swap on the forums out there if I am not mistaken. Might help if you haven't swapped a 617 into something before. Post pics of your swap.

Stock the 617 hovered around 127 turbo and 87 N/A, the 606 starts at 170ish and many people can get that up to 400+ hp with the right tools and knowledge.
