Hydraulic clutch conversion

    OK the clutch cable broke while driving back from the paint shop the other night. Hey whats a 2 hour wait in 20 degrees just to be able to pay $90 more to get the 69 home :( This is has to be the worst cable setup I have seen. Has any one done a hydraulic clutch conversion on a Commando? This 69 is looking like a great choice for the upgrade. I did one on my 83 CJ7 but it was simple and there were plenty of how tos.

    Here is a good link to to the Jeepster man. he has a lot of great Commando parts. Including a clutch modification I just think hydraulic is a better way to go.

    Eddy, has anyone shown you how to drive a manual transmission car without a clutch? Good to know...

    Not yet, but it is still early. I figure if you do not learn something every day you are not paying attention, even if it is how NOT to do something.

    You may get conflicting opinions here but I like mine alot.

    Jeepsters are known for cable clutch problems even with new cables.
    just search and you can get lots of info...:)

    No I will go with you on this. The conversion on my CJ7 was like night and day for the better.

    For what it is worth Summit now wants $79 for the slave cylinder. I picked up the Howe racing one instead. It was $47 or around there. The only difference was a .25 of an inch on the shaft travel. I can make that up on the bracket. I already had a master from a parts jeep. I will post how it looks when I get it installed. Thanks for the link it helped a lot!

    Thats what this place is all about....

    I got most of my parts on ebay,purchased a braided line for it there too.

    I know I left here about a year or so ago. I am back now and have time again to get back into the jeeps.This is the best site bar none! This thread just proves that point.:)

    I wish I could find this or remember where I saw it, I think it was over on http://jeepstercommandoclub.com but someone found a that the Hydrolic Clutch parts from I think a Toyota was almost a direct replacment.

    I thought I bookmarked it and saved for future use, but no luck.

    Let me know what you decide and do, as it is also on my to do list:)

    Well I mounted the master cylinder no problem. I removed the clutch pedal and the old cable hardware and bolted the new push rod on worked great. The Slave cylinder was a little more work The bracket that is shown in the thread does not match up to my tranny. I removed the clutch bell crank and all of the old linkage. I used the old cable mount bracket to fab a new mount for the end of the slave cylinder. I have to attach the line once it comes in. I will post pics one it is all in and it works.:rofl:

    The one in the pics is on a sm420 chevy trans.
    You just have to fab someting up that works.
    It has to be good and solid or it will flex:rofl:

    When your done,
    get under there and watch the movment,
    while someone works the clutch.

    Well I got the conversion done today. I used a L bracket to the top left hand side of the transmission. I attached the hydraulic Master cylinder on the fire wall. Ran the steel hose and bled it. I had to play with the length of the slave cylinder a little to get it to work. But man what a difference. It takes hardly any pressure and shifts great. I will post the pics tonight

    Slave cylinder from Summit. HRE-829. $47.69

    Flex steel hose. Ebay Longacre 36. Part number 28050 $30.00

    The master had the perfect bracket to mount to the clutch pedal. Just drilled hole in the clutch pedal and put a bolt through it and made sure it lined up when pushed in all the way. Made sure the bore was the same on both the master and the slave cylinder. Put new spring on the clutch pedal. Bled the system adjusted the slave for max pull. Works GREAT!!!

    Man that looks great,thanks for the pics and the part numbers.How far down from the clutch pedal pivot point did you end up drilling the hole for the master cylinder push rod? If possible I would like to see a picture of the underside of the dash area showing the pedal/rod details.
    Is the master cylinder two bolt hold down flange angled (as compared to horizontal) in the way it bolts up to the fire wall? Maybe this conversion could make a write up for the "Technical Articles".

    Oh yea I almost forgot to ask,is the Toyota master cylinder line connection a S.A.E. or metric threaded fitting?

    If you get under there and look hard,
    you might find what I did,
    there was allready a hole in the pedal in the right spot.:)
    It should line up with where your pushrod comes thru when you mount the master.
