Removing Brake Drums from Hub

    Often Brake drums have to be pulled off of the hub. But I have some with a special problem.

    These are a Dana 27 8" drums on the front full float hubs. 1966 CJ

    They are off the axle housing-- but the hubs are not even coming off with a machinist press.

    At first I thought they were just rusted on but on close exam it looks like lugs and the drum are flared together-- or friction welded around the base each pressed in lug. It looks like a factory thing. there is a hair-line welt-- as if the lug stud and drum has been intentionally seized together.

    Has anyone dealt with this situation. I have soaked where the drum and hubs join for weeks in WD40 with no results.

    I am thinking about grinding off the lug bolts and part of the drum face to see it I can get the hubs off the drums that way.---????

    Did you loosen the shoe adjusters? Eccentrics ( 9") or star wheel (11"). Will the drum rotate by hand? If the shoes aren't holding them in, the drum should come free with the hub. What type of locking hubs do you have on the D27? You also need to make sure that you've completely removed the axle nut and washers. Sometimes these don't always look like a regular nut. Warn Lock-O-Matics have a special locking ring held in place with an allen screw.

    seach swaged.
    You can get them apart but even when careful it probably will ruin the threads in the hub.

    Wished I had just bought new hubs :rofl:
