I currently have a saginaw steering setup and plan on going to a power setup.... What have you guys used for the bracket? I am sure it is already posted some where on here...

Am I correct in thinking... all i have to do is replace the manual box with a Power Steering gearbox and mount the pump?

Of course I will have to fab a bracket.... My setup was pulled from a mid 80's Cherokee.

The owner prior to me did the saginaw setup and notch a spot out of the engine mout to make room for the steering shaft... is this correct?

I also bought some new headers and pipes from JC Whitney.... will they cause problems with clearance on the new Power setup?

    Thanks,
    *******

I had to notch my MM for the shaft...some do, some don't so thats okay.

When you say bracket, do you mean the pump bracket? If so a 231 bracket and pump will bolt right up to the head. Just watch where the return line fitting comes out on your pump. It can interfere if you get the wrong pump, but most work fine.

The box should bolt up to the frame, however it will have a longer input shaft. This may require you to cut your steering shaft a little shorter.

Headers will help clear the steering shaft. If not using headers then a 231 manifold is supposed to clear but I have never physically seen how this setup clears.

Hope all of this helps ;) Click on my webshots link in my sig., I have some pics of my sagi swap to help people along :)

    THANKS for the info.....

Now.... Does anyone have a 231 bracket? ;)

Would you go with the cherokee pump I have or find one from a 231?

I just pulled the pump and bracket together off of a 77 Buick Century. Most any GM pump is the same, its the reservoir and where the lines come out that need to be checked for fit.

Rio Grande: Mine clears, just barley, but it clears. You can switch your end to the top from the bottom of the knuckle.
